1999-2000 247 vs 2002+ 247?

I've been searching through 247 Transfer Cases and have a question. Why are 1999-2000 247's $700-$1,000 but 2002+ 247's are $400-$600? (Haven't seen many 2001's for some reason)

Will a 2002+ 247 work with my 2000 WJ? Will anything need to be transfered from my 247 to the new 247?

They use the 247 in the Quadra drive and the quadra track II maybe that is the difference between the two. There is also a 147 which is quadra track I. I am not positive but I think the quadra drive TC has a few extra parts so it works with the vari-lock. I would look for a 247 from a QD WJ.

I maybe wrong on this dont own a WJ but its a free bump at least.

a 247 is a 247 whether its out of quadra-trac II or quadra-drive, same exact transfer case. A 2002 will work with your 2000, but the front output on the 2002 is a u-joint style yolk instead of the cv style that is on yours, so you would either need a new drive shaft or move your cv yolk onto the new transfer case (one big bolt).

So I can easily use a 2002+ Transfer case? Just have to change yolks?

Sorry for the quick hijack, but just when I though I had TC's figured out, I read that. I thought 242HD's only came on 4.7's. I have a 242J on my 2003 4.0. Does this mean I actually have the same 242 that came on the 4.7?

IIRC the 242HD which was labeled as 242J were only in the 4.7s

Edit* and it may have just been 2002-2003

Well.... I definitely have a 4.0 with a transfer case that is definitely marked 242J. Am I special?

if I'm right, that just means you have a 242 not the HD

No, not special

I'm confused now. If the 242HD is labeled as 242J, and my TC is labeled 242J, doesn't that mean I have the HD? Or is this one of those all of A is B but not all of B is A?

J means "Jeep" and is only a designation for what vehicle the case is made.

Therefore, all 242 are labelled 242J, the same as all 247 are 247J.

Now the thing is, that 242J for 4.0 is different than 242J for 4.7.
The 4.7 is called HD version, because it has larger chain (obviously to withstand more torque from the engine). They are not interchangeable because of number of splines.

Also keep in mind, that 247 for 4.0 won't bolt directly to 4.7 and vice versa. But having old one you can swap necessary parts.

Thank you for clarifying that. Is the spline count the only reason they are not interchangeable? Could you in theory switch splines and mount a 242HD to a 4.0?

Ok, I want to be absolutely sure before I purchase a Transfer Case. When I buy a 2002+ 247 to replace my 2000 247, all I will need to do is swap front yolks, correct?
