1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 Tranny problem

I am having what I think is tranny problems. It happens intermittently. Normally, it shifts @ about 2500-2750. Sometimes it shifts late, like @ 3500-4000 for all gears. It tends to "labor" more when this is happening. It will do it for a while then when I stop or get home to look at it, it is happening anymore. I also noticed that one time it was doing this, the speedometer was "bouncing". It would be at the speed I was going and drop about 20MPH then bounce back up to normal speed. How do I know if the tranny is running in "limp mode"? Can anyone give me any advice on this problem? I haven't had any engine lights come on during any of the times it has acted up. Any info would help lots.

First of all, check the transmission fluid. Make sure it is full and clean. It should be redish in color.
