1998 grand Cherokee 5.9 vs 1999 Cherokee 4.7
I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 4x4 with 122K miles. I love the car and can't see getting rid of it but came across a 1998 5.9 in great shape with 125K miles. First off what is a good price for a 1998 as this one seems priced high but in great shape. Next is it work buying and selling my 1999. I do know the dash on the 1998 is dated as my 1999 it all changed. Also my 1999 has cloth interior where the limited 1998 is leather. Are the 1998 5.9's that must faster than mine?
Is it worth buying and selling my 1999. My 1999 is in good shape but think I could only get about $3000 or so selling it and the 1998 is priced at $6000 which is a bit high but in excellent condition.
Does anyone in here have a 5.9 and had the regular v8?

that is what I was thinking as well. KBB has it at $4600 as I would be very interested if I could snatch it up around $4000. I think I will just keep my eye on it and check back in a month if it is still available. Just know if I get it my 1999 would be tough to sell for much of anything.

If you already have the WJ you midas well stick with that, there both have about the same off road potential, the only big thing I would think might be an issue is that the 5.9's were made in smaller numbers and the 4.7s are in greater quanity so if anything goes wrong at least there are more parts around. Unless you really want that grunt of the 5.9 you are probably better off stickin with the WJ

i have the 4.7HO in my 02 overland and it has been said that the HO tops the 5.9 in performance that's not to say a 5.9 isn't BA it is and always will be but you can't really believe the saying "there is no replacement for displacement". 1.2L more and of 20ft of extra torque sounds like the jeep engineers needed to tune it better

Yeah, but he doesnt have the HO in his 99. i found my 01 grand with the 4.7 NON HO to be every bit as fast as my buddys 5.9 grand. hands down. and if i want more power, i swap to the HO cams for 500 for the set new from mopar, do a little head work, bigger TB and HO intake plenum and injectors (about 1k total or way less if your experienced) and your faster than a 5.9 hands down. IMHO

your 4.7 should be faster then the 5.9, but it all depends on how it has been maintained.
also i belie the 5.9 will need premium fuel.
i would say keep the WJ and just change the cloth to leather if you really want to but with leather you have to keep it clean and care for it. since it will crack and loss it color if not taken care of.

when the 4.7 came out it was the rock crawlers engine of choice. I don't remember the numbers but the torque maxes out at a very low RPM and most of the torque hangs out until redline

According to wjjeeps.com, not many parts are interchangeable between the HO and the non HO.
