1997 Grand Cherokee

Hey all,
Had a 92 wrangler (in sig) that I regretfully gave up when I went to college. I am thinking about picking up a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited. It has 198k miles, 6 cylinder, black leather interior- supposedly everything works great, no leaks, etc. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for on this vintage GC? It does need a passenger headlight and quarterpanel from a sideswipe accident.

I have the seller talked down to $600 and am bringing a trailer to pick it up tonight but was wondering if this model is known for any issues. I have been lurking around this section and searched through old threads, however nothing seems to be jumping out!

Thanks in advance,
Alex

are you going to lift it and wheel it? Towing? If so, look for a 5.2L V8 with less miles that the one you are looking at. Or if you can find one, the 5.9L!!!! The I6's in the grands dont make it nearly as much fun to drive, the life expectancy between the two are about the same, and get about the same MPG.

I should state because the 5.2's come with d44a in the rear, and 3.73 gears, so you wont really need to upgrade those, unless you go with 35's someday, lol.

I have a Silverado with a duramax diesel/Allison tranny that is my primary towing/off road vehicle. This is more of an around town gas rig that might see a body lift later down the road. It is going to be more of a beater and for the price I was thinking that I can't beat it.

Ok, well in that case you should be fine. FYI, grand cherokee's are partial unibodies, so you CAN NOT body lift them. Purhaps a budget boost? Whats the condition of it exterior, interior, etc?

supposedly it is in pretty good shape. I am buying it off of the guy who drove it off the lot 12 years ago. He was recently involved in a sidewipe which prompted him to get a new car, it needs passenger headlight and quarterpanel. I didn't know it was a uni car, good to know. If everything goes according to plan I'll throw up some pics tonight.

If it goes well, i'm looking forward to seeing the pics! Headlight and quarter panel isn't too bad. A pick-n-pull should help you out there, and if you cant find a headlight, ebay is a good place to look for those.

yeah the i6 is pretty bulletproof, can last well past 200k miles as long as you keep good care of it and DO NOT forget to change the oil every 3k miles. One thing the i6 is known for is overheating in hot temps so as long as you make sure old coolant is flushed out and there is fresh coolant in there, you dont have much to worry about. If it does have the 249 transfer case (no 2wd option) than you DEFINATELY are going to need new viscous coupler, those commonly die before 200

That was a steal, no seriously good catch! Right in time for the snow too, eh? Looks like you got the Limited model with all the features.... lucky! interior looks just like mine Trust me you are going to fall in love with those seats

Yeah it does have the 249 Transfer case based on the interior pic so viscous coupler is something to keep your eyes on

hey all started tearing into the jeep tonight. So far on my list I need the black plastic "headlight bucket" that the turn and corner marker mount to. I also need 2 passenger door hinges. Any idea on where to pick these up?
