1997 Grand Cherokee 150$

Hi guys my cousin has a 97 Grand cherokee with 130k miles on it. He took alrite care of it, used it for college. Turns out his transmission blew on it, and can't drive it. It may also need a rear diff, he said it was noisy. He doesnt know much about cars and wants it gone. He said I could have it for 150$, but my question is this...

I've only had German cars and would expect to pay $4000+ for a tranny. Is this the same for Jeep? If it is its not worth it to me. I can't put it in myself.

Anyone have a transmission for sale? v6 with 4wd. Thanks!

Just use it for a parts Jeep and buy another one that needs everything BUT a tranny, lol. Or, if it's worth fixing up I'm sure you could find a used tranny for about $500? Either way, that's a smokin deal, get it!

Welcome man! Trans isn't too expensive, and not that hard, you can do it your self if you're able bodied, and have some free time and space

Transmission should only be about $300 at the junkyard and a shop would probably charge you another $300 or so to install it or you can have it completely rebuilt with a full warranty for about $1200-$1500.

Inline 6 bud. 42re's are easy to come by. like was said before, hit the junkyard and pick it up for cheap.

I saw a Grand Cherokee (looked like '97) for $500 at a used car lot and was certain it was missing a "2" in front of it (these carry their value quite well and have gone for $1000 to $2500 even today - more at a dealer). I figured it might have been in the condition of the one Stevejg referred to. If I had space for it and time, I'd go for it. I couldn't justify it from a money perspective because I'd probably spend about $2000 to get it running, and I already have a '94 GC that works great. It was sold that day so I didn't have time to think twice. If you have money for a car (even a used car), you're basically getting $2000 of parts for $150. For probably $2000 (parts & labor at a reasonable shop) you'll have a rebuilt tranny and water pump, and a great car that will last a long time. Keep a savings account for that unknown repair that might crop up, but after the tranny you shouldn't expect any major problems. Go for it!

I'd be looking at this purely for cheap transportation, I'm not really a jeep enthusiast. Sounds like transmissions are not that expensive, as I'd like to be under $2k total with rebuild and 150$, I would probably end up selling it. Thanks for the replies...

Make sure you advertise it here on the forum, I bet so many of us would be willing to buy it and do the work ourselves. Heck I'd buy 'er just to fill my garage and make it look like I'm more of a hardcore Jeeper lol
