1997 4.0 Timing Chain

Hi all. I am trying to put a new timing chain and sprocket in my 97 Grand Cherokee. I have the dealer service manual but I am running into a couple of problems.

1st. I can get the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshafts lined up perfectly without the timing chain attached. However, after lining them up, removing them and then reinstalling them with the chain included, the marks always seem to move a bit. They do not move a whole lot at all but they move. I this is something to be concerned with?

2nd, the service manual specifies a timing chain with 48 pins in it. However, the one that came out of my vehicle has 60 pinsand the one the dealership sold me has 60 pins. Did Jeep change the chain used for this vehicle or is the service manual just wrong? The problem this is causing me is that the service manual instruts to use 15 pins (on a 48 pin chain) as a measure to make sure the chain is installed correctly. I'm trying to figure out how many I should use on the 60 pin chain. Thanks.

If the dots aren't lined up your timing will be way off.

The number of link or pins corresponds to the size and number of teeth your gears have. As long as the chain fits well and is the same circumference as your old chain it will work
