1995 zj w/ part-time 4x4

I have a 1995 zj and it has the part-time 4x4 transfer case, my buddy has a 1996 ford explorer and he has the options of 2wd, 4 auto, and 4 lo. he came across a mod on the explorer forum which is called the brown wire mod. it turned the 4 auto into a 4 hi. any mod i can do to do this to make it run to a toggle like have in it 2wd and flip the toggle and its locked in 4 hi?

When you say "Part-time transfer case", does that mean you swapped in a 231 or 242?

I would think no as this system works off a viscous clutch like and awd car(as I understand it).

First of all, flipping a toggle to go from 2wd to 4wd is .

You said you had a "part-time case". In 95' ZJ's this could mean either a 231 (2wd, 4 hi, 4lo) or a 242 (2wd, 4ft, 4 hi, 4lo). I assume you DO NOT have the 249 since it does not have a part-time mode.

I know nothing about Explorers and can only assume that "4 auto" means there is some sort of differential inside the transfer case that does not split torque 50-50 front to rear. I further assume that by "4 hi" you mean the torque split is 50-50 front to rear. If so then it makes alot of sense why this brown wire mod is popular with the Explorer guys.

Now for the good news. No matter if you have the 231 or 242 t-case, the 4 hi mode locks front and rear together. And you already have a toggle to go from 2wd to 4 hi; its called the t-case lever.

Since you have a 5.2 in your 95 you have the Quadra-Trac transfer case which came on all of the 5.2's. This transfer case uses a viscous coupler to engage the front wheels when the rear wheels start to slip. It is an all-wheel-drive and cannot be altered. The only way to get 2WD-4HI and 4LOW is to swap in a 231 or 242 transfer case. You can find all the information you need on that by doing a search.

Whats worse is that 93-95 249's did not lock front to rear even in 4 lo. The engineers that came up with that idea must have been pipe dreaming. If you want 2wd then you need to swap in a 231 or a 242. Matching up the input shaft lengths is a little tricky for 95's and earlier. Do your research before putting money on the table.

Answer is no..

The transfer cases used in these jeeps are mechanical not electrical.. So you can do all the wiring you want, you cant change the internal workings of the case in question.

I dont see why you would NEED a 2wd mode if you have a 4wd fulltime case. Maybe if you want to do burnouts or some silly stuff, you wont save on gas or any other nonsense..
