1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo Differential.

I just bought a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Larado, it has the SelecTrac, and looks like the towing package. I had some rear end noise, and the mechanic at work said it probably just needed an oil change, and it did indeed quiet it down and fixed the problem.

But he said it didn't look like a Limited Slip differential, but he wasn't sure (I work at a trucking company, they usually work on really really big differentials. Ones that need cranes.)

How can I tell if it's a LS or not?

4.0L, and like I said, it has a tow hitch, that appears factory, since the bumper goes around it.

If you want jack both rear tires off the ground, and spin one tire. I Believe a limited slip rear end will spin both tires in the same direction, whereas an open differential will spin each tire in opposite directions. Some one verify this for me, as I only recall this from my step-dad(knowledgeable, but extremely old school), and reading somewhere.

Get a build sheet from a dealer or from

Jeep.com

You'll need your VIN.

It will tell you if you have a tow package, what diff, and fifty other things, etc.

Even U-Haul hitches fit inside the bumper. Does it say 'Mopar' on it?

The limited slip only came in the 96+v8's with the D44a rear end as far as I know.

i thought the only ones to come with limited slip was the niner and the early 93's?

I am pretty sure that all 96+ v8's with tow package had limited slip. It may have been an option for the 4.0. Jack up the back and spin the wheels.

My 1996 4L with Dana 35 has an LSD - fitted from new by Jeep, according to the build sheet.

What on the build sheet says limited slip? Mine says "DRMP Dana 35C/194MM Rear Axle" I'm assuming I have an open diff, correct?

I've been doing some more research, and I've seen comparisons of the open diff and the LSD unit. Am I correct in saying that the LSD unit is more cylindrical shaped and the open carrier is tapered on the end away from the ring gear?

weird.. because i thought all 5.2's come with a D44? i guess not.. but hey at least i have limited slip..

from my build sheet..

DJHS Dana M30/181MM Front Axle
DMEP 3.73 Axle Ratio
DRMP Dana 35C/194MM Rear Axle
DSA Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle
ELF 5.2L V8 MPI Engine

93' ZJ - 5.2L. 4.5" IRO lift. front long arms rear short adjustables. bilsteins. daystar bumps. 33" KM2's. rancho ss. rc quick discos. flowmaster 10 series.
