1994 grand cherokee good price and good base for offroading?

my friend offered to sell his cherokee for 2k, its the V6 model 4x4 and has 140k miles on it. would that be a good buy and a good base car for some offroading?

i just want to do some trail blazing and minor rock climbing.

that's is a decent price depending on the condition of the vehicle? I just use mine for daily transportation no off roading. and it should have a inline 6 not a V-6.

it prob is a I-6 i should have said 6cyl. and its in fair condition and it had a full tune up 2 months ago. is there anything i should look for? like something grand Cherokees are notorious for?

Exhaust Manifold - right around the welds- most common thing with the i6

The rear main oil seal is probably leaking at 140K. It's not too big a deal to replace if you do it yourself.

If you can spare and extra couple grand or finance it I would get one that already has some work done as it usually will cost less than doing it yourself. Just depends on what you want to do to it and where you plan on wheeling it. But that is half the fun.

Check the transfer case. If it is the 249, Quadra-Trac which only has 4-All Time and 4-Lo, the viscous coupling could be bad. Most people just swap in a 242, Select-Trac has 4-All Time, 2-Hi, 4-Hi, 4-Lo. It is cheaper and better for offroading.

As a daily drive and light wheeler this is not a bad choice. I personaly would hold out for a V8, I have the 4.0 in my wifes WJ and it gets around but leaves me wanting more.

As a rule I don't buy vehicles from people I know, you are setting yourself up for trouble.
