1990 Cherokee Engine in a 1995 ZJ?

Short and simple.

Would a 1990 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Engine fit in a 1995 Jeep GRAND Cherokee? Or would there be compatibility issues (Computers, exhaust ports, etc.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sam

you will want to swap over your intake manifold (the 90 XJ has TBI if im not mistaken, 95 ZJ has MPI). and some sensors are probably different, but other than that i think theyre the same. dont hold me to that though

Okay man, thanks I appreciate it. I know the 90 4.0s have about 13 HP less (177 compared to 190) than the 1995 4.0s, however mine (the 95) is leaking some oil, uses some oil, and i'm pretty certain has a cracked engine block. My 1995 4.0 also has 212k miles and the Cherokee motor only has 127k (which is overall in better shape) which should be better in the long run.

I was just curious if it wasn't too difficult to convert from a 95 zj engine to a 90 cherokee engine. I know Chrysler made some changes in 1991 (like you said, TBI to MPI) and didn't know if it would raise more issues than it would be worth lol

Thanks again.

Sam

the 1990 is what is known as the "renix" engine and honestly probably has alot more to change than just the intake. i know sensors and such vary greatly between the two.

I do believe the only thing you'll be able to use will be the block. Even then I think the oil pressure sending unit is in a different place (maybe). I'm somewhat familiar with the RENIX 4.0, but pretty much not at all with the one you have now.
