04 Overland 4x4 Towing & MPG ?s
I have a stock '04 Overland 4x4, owned it since 04, and still love it. It sees very little offroading as I use my Wrangler for most offroad adventures. However, I do tow with the Overland. I get 20-21MPG on the hwy, but as soon as hook up to a trailer (6’x12’ utility or enclosed 2,000pds loaded) my mileage drops automatically to 10-12MPG. If I run the trailer empty, I get 10 or less…but if weight is on it, I can get up to 11.7MPG.
What are others getting, with the same setup (4x4 Overland), when towing? Thanks.

When I tow my boat (around 4700pds dry weight, normally more with gear) I get about 11mpg but I don't tow far and take it nice and easy. It is a tandem axle trailer which helps the mileage.

When I tow my YJ on a tandem 16', I get around 11 mpg also. Total weight is just shy of 6000 lbs. I would recommend trailer brakes on anything over ~1500 lbs.
*Edit* - I have 245/75R16 BFG mud terrains with stock gears.

Yep...it seems everyone is getting the same mileage, whether it is towing a light trailer (1500lbs or less) or a heavy load. Thanks for the responses, I was just wanting to ensure I wasn't the only one.

WOW! I thought our 15 mpg (city) was rough...because it went down from 17.5mpg (city) over the years.

I know a possible reason why it would have a significant drop... when you tow you should turn off overdrive which means you will be running at higher rpms, hence burning more gas. I think, I do not know for sure.

Some of that loss (from 17.5 mpg) would be from the change to ethanol in the gas - close to a 5% drop, or 3/4 of an mpg for you.
Thank your Congresscritter for that little benefit...

Why does that urban legend show up in every towing thread? You do NOT need to turn off the OD when towing. The ONLY time you should do so is if the transmission is hunting between gears. You SHOULD NOT turn off the OD for towing, unless you just enjoy buying extra fuel.

I very rarely have to turn OD off...only in foot hills of the Smokey mtns so far. Every else I've towed our trailer it has been fine - transmission not hunting for gears

I believe the factory owners manual for my '02 HO says to turn off overdrive when towing heavy loads.

That is what my manual says for my '03 limited HO. That is why I posted it.
