York OBA project

Well....

Yet another project I've wanted to do for awhile but never got around to starting. On Board Air. In moab, I watched the one guy with OBA air up 4 rig's tires with out so much as a wimper. He ran an air die grinder with great results. All off a York 210 air compressor setup. I've had this york setting here for going on a year now. It's the 210 model, which is the largest volume york made. At 1500rpm's, it can outperform most home air compressors with it's CFM output. So......another project begins.

I started with a york off a 75 scout II that I had. I bought the scout for $200, sold the axles for $250 and got the york off it...basically for nothing. "Free" is always good in my book.

Now, as you can see.....it came with a double V-belt clutch on it. No good for me, since I have a serpentine setup. With jeeps, only the 258 engine had a vbelt setup. All other's were serpentine setups....so keep that in mind if your gonna go this route. Since I needed a serpentine setup, I did a little research and poking around online and found a serpentine clutch that will work with the 210 model york's. Bingo...I was in business. $65 bucks to my door. You can find it HERE. 5 seconds with the impact gun and the old clutch was off. Another few minutes and the new one was on. This was easy!

The other "large" piece to this setup is a tank. While the york can put out a decent amount of air on it's own.....once you add a tank to an OBA setup, your options open waaayyy up. Virtually any air tool, and less cycling of the compressor. All add's up to quick tire inflations and easy work of air tasks. Again, ebay to the rescue. I found the VIAIR 2.5 gallon tank on there for 55 bucks shipped to my door. Not bad I didn't think. The up side's to this tank. 150psi working pressure. SIX ports. Yes....six. More than I'll ever need for a great setup, and room for expansion if I need it. The tank has feet with rubber isolators to mount it securely to the bottom of the jeep.

So this is where I begin the project. My plan is to go hunting this weekend for all the fittings/regulator/pressure valves...etc. and hopefully get everything I need to get it going. If time permit's, I'll start on the install this weekend. My plan is really no different than most OBA setups, front and rear ports, regulators at both ends so I can attach air tools both in front and rear, and plumb the tank to the underside of the rig....drivers side just inside the frame rail.

More pic's as they come!!!

Me too. I want to do this to my pickup.

Edit: I just realized we have the same accessory system now that you have a 350. How are you mounting it to the GM serpentine brackets?

You're going to love your York. Besides the capacity, it's a much better long term solution IMO. My dad put a used York on his about 25 years ago and it keeps on going. I just don't see the electric pumps lasting that long. Dirt is eventually going to get into them and being unlubricated I just can't imagine them lasting.

Good deal on the clutch
Maybe I'll get around to starting my setup and follow along.

Dimensions on the tank ?
Do you plan on rebuilding the york ?

Just to add to this thread. If hunting one down in a salvage yard bring a 6v lantern battery and apply it to the York. You should here the clutch kick in and then put a finger on the outlet and give it a full turn and a half. Remove finger and you should have preasure. Make sure the York does a full turn.
