YJ with Turbo Diesel

I found a YJ and it has a turbo diesel in it.Is this a freak of nature or did jeep have a diesel, and if they did are they any good and who made this engine. If you have any info on this or could guide me to some one it would be greatly appreciated.

U.S. jeeps did not have a diesel. It was probably swapped in. Other than that I can't help ID the engine.

correct, not even on this side of the atlantic... the only sort wheelbase jeep that ever had a factory diesel option was the cj5.it was imported by renauld, and it was them you suplied the engine.
however, i can see it work in a yj....

deisels have there advantage over gas for 4x4ing. and there disadvantages.. They have way more torque for crawling typically get better gas mileage some get up to 30 mpg. Disadvantage. They don't have the high rmps of gas. so they don't mud bog as well. but they still do good. They weigh a lot.. I was accually very stongly thinking about putting a deisel in my jeep. It would have been a great swap. I have seen a few people do the deisel swap and love it.

I agree. I am going to try it. A Cummins in a CJ7. I am sure I will succeed.

I think if you set it up right a diesel would be ok in the mud. I have seen a diesel Dodge Ram 4x4 run 10.5 in the 1/4 mile.

pictures would help.
the CJ 10a's also had diesel engines (I think, made by nisan?)
however, as far as I know, a diesel was never available in a YJ, so it's most likely been swapped in.

Some cherokees had diesels from the factory, early models, like late 80s i believe. I have seen one personally a long time ago, might be the same engine.

Yes, you are quite right. The CJ-10a was contracted to be equipped with a Nissan diesel to be an airplane tug. There are not a whole hell of a lot of them. Ditto on the no production YJ diesels.
I have found that an increasingly popular swap for the YJ (and any other Jeep for that matter) is the Cummins 4BTA. I have one in my shop just for that purpose. It could be you have found one that has been converted...maybe
In the catagory of useless info though, Mitsubishi was producing diesel CJ-3's into the late 80's and early 90's equipped with their diesel engine. Here are some pics I took in the Houston area of a couple with slightly updated fenders.

WOW!! $8500 that guy is proud of those CJ's. I understand that they are unique but no thanks for that kind of price.
