YJ Torque Specifications

I'm bored, VERY bored. So I thought I'd crack open a repair manual and list all the torque specs in a thread so that they will be searchable for future use.
Not sure if this has been done before, if so - then I guess we have some redundancy. ;)

So here we go. Below are all of the torque specs of all the bolts listed in my Haynes Manual for the 1987 - 2003 Jeep Wrangler.
Or course I'll leave out all the non-YJ specific ones.
I'll get what I can tonight, and then work on it more tomorrow night. And then I'll clean it up and catagorize it better after that. Right now I'm just wanting to get the information typed while I'm running a very long and boring job here tonight and have free time. ;)

As the nuts and studs are between the fan clutch and pulley, how do you set the torque? I can't fit a ratchet or torque wrench in that space!
Also, what are the torque settings for the power steering pump mount bolts?

Shock Absorber Nuts (Rear) - 125 ft-lbs
I believe this is incorrect.

Besides being a huge amount of torque for a sheet metal bracket, the Haynes Manual I have says 44 ft/lbs. I don't have a FSM to cross-reference though. The Haynes DOES say that 125 ft/lbs. is correct for the track bar nuts.

Please let me know if I am wrong because 44 ft/lbs is what I set mine at tonight when I installed my Skyjacker Shocks.

Airbag Module Retaining Nuts (1995) - 100 in-lbs

Well folks, that looks to be it!
I'm going to go through the book and see if there is something I missed. If anyone wants to chime in and correct me or input something that I missed please do so.

I was wondering about these values

Oil Pan Mounting Bolts 1/4 x 20 - 84 in-lbs
Oil Pan Mounting Bolts 5/16 x 18 - 132 in-lbs

Anyone has these on ft-lbs? I am not very good with numbers and my torque wrench comes with ft-lb or Nm graduations, not in-lbs

Thanks

Good one for the sticky topics somewhere, IMO

It is, and has been, on the first page of the FAQ. :tea:

Here are some pictures for those that don't have bolt sequence diagrams for the head & manifold installations. Some notes to go along with the pictures:

  • There's one head bolt on each engine that goes into the water cavity, these are the ones identified as needing Locktight to seal them properly.
  • The dowels refered to in the the 2.5 head installation can be a couple of spare head bolts used for head alignment, or you can make the dowels by using a couple of bolts the same size with the heads cut off and a slot cut into the tops for removal with a screwdriver. You put these dowels into holes #8 and 10, slide the head over the dowels, and then you can carry on with the rest of the instructions.
  • Run a tap through all bolt holes to clean them out and run a die over the bolt threads, otherwise bolt tightness (torque) won't be correct.

I'm added a leaf to my spring pack and got to thinking after I took it apart, how tight do I need to tighten the center bolt of the spring now that I have it put back together with the new leaf?
Maybe this should be determined and added to this thread....?

35 ft lbs when installing and 25-40 to check them.

HI Brandon YJ,
This is terrific stuff. Thanks for going to the trouble. You must be going blind with eye strain. I know most of this stuff is in the FSM but its all spread out and sometimes hard to find.

You can be sure I will save this in a Word document. Starting now!!

I can't find on here what I'd use for the bolts for the ends of the rear drive shaft. I gotta replace both pinion seals on the transfer case and rear diff. But I don't know what any of that would be.

The 3 bolts that connect the back part of the transfer case to the drive shaft and the yolk connections (?), I don't know the name for it exactly.

Driveshaft U-Join Strap Bolts - 14 ft-lbs
Front Differential Pinion shaft Nut - 210 ft/lbs (Same as rear)

as for the case, you are talking about the rear housing tail cone correct??? That is just tighten to snug in my book.

I've got another quick one, please. Motor mounts to frame and motor mount through bolts. Working on my MML and there's nothing in the Haynes except "tighten them securely"

Mitchness,

Since you're looking for a quick reply AND rather than hold up your progress - here is a chart to use when you need a torque value that isn't in your manual:

Bolt Torque Chart | Portland Bolt

Be aware of the size and GRADE of your bolts, as you scroll down there are a number of charts for the various bolt sizes and grades. When I use never-sieze, motor oil or a thread locker material on the threads, I would reduce the stated torque values by 5 to 10%.

For example, if the chart calls for a torque of 48 ft lbs, I'd subtract 8% of 48 (48 x 0.08 = 3.8; which I'd round up to 4) which is 4, so I'd torque the fastener to 44ft lbs. Good Luck!

J-Quad :cheers2:

Caliper mounting bolts

I see on this forum that the torque for the calper bolts are 25-35 for 1987-1989 & 1990 up are 132. I have a 1990 YJ & have broke 2 bolts trying to torque over 75. They are the original 13mm 12pt. bolts, but how do I know if they are the ones that are supposed to be torqued to 132 ft. lbs.?
