YJ - Tansfer Slipping?

when I put my jeep into 4x4 it feels like it is slipping (I hear a clunking noise) as well as it feels like it is slipping in and out of gear. It does this intermittently. When I don't have it in 4x4 - the jeep runs fine. What is this and is it expensive?
