YJ Steering column/transmission help

I've gotten my '88 up and running but my steering column plastic is starting to break and my turn signals don't work. What would be the best to do, find a new steering column or just fix the wiring and get a new signal set up?

My gears grind when I down shift, an ideas?

I'm new to this working on cars thing and I'd appreciate the help.
