YJ slips out of 4wd

First of all, it's difficult to shift the t-case into 4wd. When it finally shifts into 4wd, it will often slip out. I know it's not a vacuum problem, b/c I have a posi-lok.

Will a stretched chain cause it to slip out of 4wd? If not, could someone please give me some advice here??

Never heard of anyone having that problem with the 231. I used to have that problem with an Isuzu Trooper I had so I tied the lever back. Sorry, I realize that isn't much help. I just ain't sure what the problem might be. I doubt it's the chain though. More likely a shift detent problem in your 231. Get a manual and tear it open. It's not really too bad a job if you have a decent shop to work in. A puller and a few varieties of snap ring pliers are a real plus. It's been awhile since I've pulled one of these apart so I'm sorry I can't produce any sort of detailed help. The case is simple though (with a shop manual) and I'm sure if you get it open the problem will be apparent.

I'd definitely take a look at the linkage. Does either 4wd range work? Are you getting a false neutral in 4wd or does the rear axle still work? Is the front d-shaft turning when you move forward? If so, it may be a bad vacuum motor, or hoses disconnected. You don't show a body lift in your signature, but they can cause problems with getting into 4-lo.

The problem is with both ranges. As a matter of fact, I CAN get the gear reduction with 4lo, but neither of the front tires have power, as the front d-shaft does not turn.

I know the problem is not with the vac hoses, because I've got a posi-lok, and it works great.

If I have a successfull gear reduction with 4lo, but have no front d-shaft power, what could be the problem?

BTW, no body lift; only suspension.

Thanks for the help guys.
