YJ nightmare!

my son and i have a 90 YJ that has been nothing but electrical H*** ever since we bought the thing. We have replaced everything BUT the wiring harnesses including the ECU! The problem usually has been no ignition, but now we have no power to the fuel pump. I jumped a 12 volt source to the fuel pump wire, got fuel pressure, had ignition fire, but still had to pull the D*** thing home. I suspect that the same power that was missing from the fuel pump is the same source to the TBI, but have no clue how to troubleshoot any further. If anyone has any suggestions or similar problems, I would appreciate any help!

What do you mean by "everything"?

List all the components that you have replaced/checked. It will be helpful in narrowing down the problem sooner without suggesting things that you've already done.

In general. when dealing with electrical issues - Start at the battery.

possibly the connection in the steering column well mine are messed up feels like teeth are missing on a gear ,thought it was the tumblers but it wasnt it was the workings inside the column hosed it all with wd40 to make sure it was gumed up ,but sometimes I had to turn it off and on acouple times to get the fuel pump to come on "works better after the wd40 maby cleaned a contact or loosend something sticky up". dont know if this helps but just tossing an idea out there.

I had the same problem. Did you replace the bulk head connector? If not do it.

I just had the same thing happen to me. It took me 3 weeks and searching for a short or a shot relay to finally discover it was a bad ECM or ecu what ever you call it

There are two great sources for this type of problem, one was a writeup by 5-90 which i have not been able to find and another was a thread response by que89yj. I will try to find the links and post back, but search and see what you find as well!

we had to change the ECU AGAIN!! it's been running ok since then, except for the fuel gauge and oil pressure gauge both were pegged out when the switch on and the engine off we narrowed that problem to no ground for the gauges at the cluster wiring connection. we made our own ground temporarily until we can trace out the wiring harness and find where it comes from

It never ceases to amaze me the number of strange issues a bad (especially a few bad) grounds will cause. It has become my default setting now for nearly any electrical issue to check the grounds before anything else.
