yj motor ideas

might pick up an 89. not sure if it was the 4cyl or 6 cyl at this point.

it has no motor/tranny. what are driveline options for such a project?

please note; i would grab a whole vehicle for a swap. either an XJ, or what about a 5.2L ZJ?

also, a chevy V8 is NOT off the table............ but if i can stay mopar i would

thanks guys

Run the vin on a decoder site. It will tell what was there.
But sky the limit on what you can put under hood. If it was me, I would find a running donor vehicle and gut it.

If I was starting over I would put in a chevy 4.3 with a 700R4 transmission. Light weight, plenty of power and lots of them available.

Or, if you are planning 1 ton axles go with a 350.

well i have a ZJ right now for trails and stuff thats pretty much good to go; so the YJ would be a project. i'm not a fan of the 3 year builds though; i'd like it running by summer you know? so i guess what would be easiest to get it running.

plans wouldn't be for anything bigger than a 35" tire, and 8.8" rear.

right now i'm thinking a 5spd. XJ for a donor. i just don't know if the mounts would line up.. guy selling it says it had a 4l in it before, but who knows.

when you plan your engine change plan on a rear axle change as well.

Ram 4x4 5.2L (to go with my ax-15)
if no tranny: 5.9L ram or ZJ v8
both are dirt cheap used

If it were me I would get a donor xj. They are plentiful and cheap. Post up a build page as you progress, they are fun to watch.

If you decide to go with the xj, the block brackets on those are different than the brackets on the yj motors. So, you'd need yj brackets to bolt it to the original motor mounts in the yj. The Cherokee fan belt routing is different also, another easy to solv problem.

Personally, I'd slap a 5.9 in there. That's likely my next swap if I can locate one on the cheap.

Find a diesel and stick it in there. TDIJ(sp?) has one with 8" yota axles and gets 29 mpg. Lol. If I were to ever do a swap I'd go there.
