YJ Homemade Highline

in another thread i have been asked for info on hom i did my highline, i had another thread on a different old forum but seems it has been moved/deleted. so i'll write up here a brief description, i will let the pics do most of the talking. if you have questions feel free to ask.

the start, 34" LBT's with just a 1" BL and 5/8 boomerangs, not much room for flex

measure and mark, tried 3/1/4" first but 3" turned out to be the magic number

dissasembly

new holes in fenders where they mount to grill, on the back end where they mount to the firewall i had to drill new holes 3" down from the factory holes. i have seen nicer ways of doing the front of the fenders since i did mine but i just 'massaged' them with a hammer to make them fit

one raised...big difference

the begining of the 'massaging' to make the front fit. this was later smoothed out and then filled with some body filler to get a not so close to factory finish

marking the hood 3" up, measure twice cut once

hood cut and i used some plastic edging to cover the cut edge

fender after undercoating them and re-painting the inside of the inners

one side bolted up

painted undercoat where rocker guards would eventually go to disguise the 3" gap at rear of the fender

both bolted up

alot more room for the 34's now

finished

i have had several people look at the front of my jeep and say "is ther something different?"

all this in less than a day. while i had it all apart i cleaned up the firewall and painted it as well. once i mounted the new sliders they covered that 3" gap at the bottom of the rear of the fender.

any questions?

Holy winch plate batman!

Looks great though, I'm a fan of highlined fenders, and these look superb, especially for a homebrew. Great work!

that is a 'superwinch' winch plate. perfect for the 8274, it was old stock, dont even know if you can find them any more.

then i added the Xenon flat flares

I have been tossing this idea back and forth. Are you running into any clearence problems with your rear tires?

i will post up pics of what i did in the rear, i cut that out 1" and also put the flat Xenon flares on and ran like that with the 34's for a while but at full stuff they did rub a bit. so i put in a 4.5" RE lift, no i dont have rear clearence issues now and now i run 37" IROKS.

so onto the rear, cut out about an inch all the way around the wheel well, less at the front and more at the rear. didnt want to cut into the seem that holds the inner wheel well onto the tub so thats about as much as you can take off on the top and front of the well. also wanted to leave enough steel to bolt the flares to since i still wanted to be able to use a flare i cvan buy off the shelf for less than a million dollars when i break em.

before...

stock flare and inner fender off

taping for marking

cut at the front

cut at the rear

after cutting

tire on, no flare

factory flare that had been trimmed

comparison shot

xenon flare

gratuitus girlfriends legs shot

before the 4.5" RE lift

after 4.5" RE lift

so i guess i've gotten a bit off topic of the highline. but it is a progression that was started with the highline and finally finished with trimming the rears and then the lift to get the clearance i needed.

these pics are all with the 34's, it now has 37"s. sure she sits high but she is still SUA. i like trying to keep the COG low. i know i could cut more sheet metal and get it lower. i am now looking at taking the 1" BL out and maybe a little more trimming.

this is how she sits today. 37" IROKS, you can see the sliders have covered the 3" gap left at the bottom of the front fender from the highline. with the 4.5" RE lift i also got 4" extended bump stops so i put them in to eliminate any body/tire conflict issues. have the same bumpstops in the rear as well.

new front shock hoops, bilsteins and you can see the extended bumpstops. dont pay attention to the hi-tech sway bar hold up wire....

as she sits now
