YJ has trouble starting
'93 YJ, 4.0 manual trans,
turn the key and nothing happens, no click, but battery etc is fine. I have been able to start it after moving the stick in and out of gears and turning the key. After a few times, it eventually starts normally. My guess is a neutral position sensor, if a manual has one.

When you say nothing happens, no you get any dash lights that come on? There isn't a Neutral Safety Switch in the manuals.

dash is normal, all gauges come on. turn the key to start and nothing changes.

Starter perhaps? You try banging on it?

ylojelo 06-25-2013 03:16 PM

but the starter isn't struggling. maybe the ignition switch?

Does your check engine light come on when the ignition is first turned on? If not, does it after waiting a few minutes? There is no NSS switch on a manual.

Love the simple fixes. Hopefully there is no underlying issue related to battery charging. Thanks for reporting back.

interesting it would just do nothing, no clicking, or slow churning of the starter. It is a redtop optima. It may be five years old, I'd have to check my notes. now to find a good battery

ylojelo 07-02-2013 12:07 PM

well crap, I just dropped in a new battery and the same: nothin'. Oh well, just traded in a 7 year old optima red top. now what?

ylojelo 07-06-2013 02:30 PM

could it be the ignition switch?

OK.. long shot here, but on my 91 2.5l 5spd, there is a ground wire just left of the e-brake release lever. Our Jeep would turn, but not fire after that wire kept getting moved by clutch working while driving. Eventually the wire was barely hanging on. Once I replaced it, started every time. Your issue sounds more sinister because you have dash, but nothing else. Research the ignition switch on here. That's where I'd start.

Check the battery cables for corrosion, at the battery and at the starter. May need new cables...

ylojelo 07-09-2013 09:49 AM

so last night I did just that, checked the cable from the + battery to the starter. It all looked fine. I disconnected and cleaned the starter end. Tried to start it but same thing, nothing. then after an hour messing with the lawn mower, I tried, nothing again, then I shook the stick in neutral back and forth, turned the key and it started right up:confused:

The time now is 06:43 PM.
