Finally got some tiny 3.5" speakers to fit in the dash.

Then I got a little creative for the speaker cover.....

You should be able to see these through the windshield. It should add little custom touch....

Time for some arts and crafts!

I finally got around to making a posterboard model of my dash.

Obviously it is hobbled together, but it is a good way to check a few things, its not super accurate, but a good way to avoid the "o $%#@, I didn't see that" I am also concerned about the placement of my steering wheel cut out, and shifter clearance, so this should give me an idea if I am close or way off.

smart thinking

when i was younger, we build a baja buggie and i remember using alot of cardboard! with duct tape as a welder and a pair of scissors as a torch. you can fix what a drafting board can't

i still use it on the bottom of boats

A little late to the party for me but, UK (British Pound) to USD as of today is 1UK = 1.575USD
So, those lovely looking indicator lights are indeed expensive. 18UK (including Value Added Tax {VAT}) equates to $28.35 USD each!! Without shipping!!
Although uber-cool I think they would price your dash out of the market.

Can't wait to see the final mock-up.

Quick question. In what aspect does a bump shifter come in to play on a jeep? is this particular jeep built for speed? the white console/ dash?

And for all of us that want easier stereo access, there is always the mariner style extendors. Mount the stereo in the center console run out any aux jacks (MP3/ I-pod etc...) and the smaller remote head can be placed just about anywhere including the steering wheel. Security and space saving. Now bare in mind I haven't actually done this or seen it done but I've been doing some hard research on it and it seems to easy.

I actually found them through digi-key.com for $9.50each. I just purchased the labels from the UK place. I got all the labels, mounts, 9 switches and connectors plus shipping for about $140.

Also, the idea behind this dash is to have multiple face plates to go over openings, so you can put any switches you want on it, or whatever else, cigg. Lighters, USB chargers, navigation if you really want.....

I have had those dumb remote things. To me they are just annoying and tacky. Probably great for some, but just not my style.

my first design I did not like so much when I got the carboard model of it into the jeep. It was just too big. So im back on the drawing board trying the shrink it down. It takes a while when I only work on it a half hr a day at lunch.

I am also working out wiring on my jeep. Since I am replacing everything on the dash, I have the whole wiring harness pulled, front to back and getting everything wired in, trying to obtain as much of a "factory" look as possible. One of my biggest pet peeves is crimp connectors and shotty wiring.

I love your attention to the small details and your desire to 'do it right' not just 'get-er-done'.
I do custom work on boats and in houses. I like a challenge. The more challenging the problem the more creative solution can be- if you take the time to work out the details!
One item that I would consider.... on the speaker covers, can you change the design to have square headlights? This IS for a YJ after all!
I would be interested in a set if you designed a kit to fit over the stock dash speakers with that logo.

Thanks!

The only problem with attention to detail is it seems like it will never get done! I wish I had more time to work on it.

I did finally decide on vents though, check out this website...

http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/category/...ilation,b.html

They have a lot good stuff here, only problem is they are in the UK, so shipping is expensive, and I dont expect it to be very fast either.

I went with the large plenums and vent covers for the defrost or "demist" and the small round vents for the front of the dash.

not a bad idea on the speaker covers, square headlights would be more appropriate!

I'll see if I cant't whip a cool stock speaker cover, in my spare time... haha

I think it's pretty badass that your making a dash that is exactly what you want. Keep up the good work and post pics as you go.

Thanks!

Just a quick update, decided on switches and got them.

9.50 Ea from Digi-key.com

They are Carling Contura II rocker switches. They come in a ton of differnt configurations, and you can get nice mounting brackets.

I also found a place to buy labels for the illuminated windows.

The best part about them is you can buy connectors to plug right into them, so I can do my entire wiring harness outside of the Jeep, and then it will just be plug and play!

I also got some marine grade panel mount 12v outlets
