YJ Dash Speaker upgrade?

I am curious if anyone has any luck changing the speaker type in the dash of YJ's. I have heard of TJ's doing this and going to a better speaker type, 6" round I think it was.. Anyone ran into this? Reason I want to do this is that 4x6 in my experience are not the greatest speaker types.

Also has anyone made a custom speaker box for the trunk that is concealed? I would like to see some pics of these.

i didn't think it would be possible to put a 6" round speaker into the YJ...just because of the whole issue with the space...although i never really thought of it so honestly i dunno how hard it would be, but i do know that it is not an easy job just trying to replace the 4x6 ones let alone put in some 6" round ones. let us know how it goes if you ever find out how to do it.

this is on my list of "things to do" and I allready know its going to be a pain,... but I'm pretty sure I'm just gona use the same size, but hopefully get some better quallity speakers. I allready have some good 6x9's in the rear. That should combo up well enough.

after replacing mine recently, I can tell you that without modification of the dash itself, you will not fit anything bigger than 4X6 in there. Wow what a tight space.

I have these speaker pods with 5.25" rockford speakers and I love them. I have also seen other yj owners on Sounddomain.com upgrade their dash speakers to 5.25", but it took them a lot of work. Hope this helps.

Thank you, I will take a look at that site. If I find anything out I will post, what 4x6 speakers did you use Rescuer, and are you happy with the sound?

I recently switched and got some pioneers. You'd be surprised the bass that can come out of those little suckers.

I just got generics for right now. The ones I replaced were pioneers and before they went the sound was great.

FYI, the speakers shorted out while I was working on replacing my radio and fixing the PO's messups.

i run 4x6 pioneers from circuit city with a 4 yr extended warranty they sound decent enough and i get them replaced free everytime i destroy them at the car wash.

you can fit a 5.25" speaker back there but you have to get creative with mounting it which in my opinion is more of a pain than it's worth considering almost 2" of the cone is behind the dash and taking away sound quality anyway...

I replaced mine with 4x6 Infinity's but its tight to get back there even with the dash half off. The sound can only go so far with that area because its an open space behind the dash... no enclosed area for speaker performance.

question: i was looking at the infinity's but the tweeter stuck out beyond the front edge of the speaker assembly. it was my thought that it would rub on the dash's built in speaker grill. how did you get around that? even my pioneers touch the metal grill just a little....

I used the Infinity reference 6402cfp. I had no rubbing issues. I even re-used the stock fabric speaker cover to help keep out mud and such. I remember hearing about the tweeter rubbing but I think I went ahead and did it anyway. Oh wait I think I used a couple washers to bring out the speaker a little bit from the dash.

Big-n-Broke,

Several companies used to make a spacer plate that went between the speaker mounting face (front) and the surface. They have not been available seperately for a while.

What you can do is get a piece of 3/8" hardboard and cut a rectangle that fits in the speaker space in the dash. Once you have that cut, place the speaker face down on the surface, trace around the oval face and cut the trace line just to the inside. You can then mount the speaker to the hardboard and mount the whole assembly to the dash plate.

Used to do this often back in the day and did the same on mine.

thanks for the suggestions and replies. i have seen spacers and i'm pretty sure one of inifity's models of 4x6 actually comes with one but i wasn't sure. good call on the hardboard. i used to use mdf to do that with 6 1/2" speakers when the magnets were too deep to fit in doors.

Same idea just in reverse. Works great.

BTW... these work well if you have this type of 4x6... Scosche speaker adapter
