They're plentiful all across the country. There's always the Mercury Mountaineer to snag an axle from as well. Drum doesn't matter because it can be swapped out later for disc. Gears and 31 spline axles along with the explorer width and bolt pattern are what makes this desirable.

I'm just waiting for someone to post up a bolt in ready 8.8 with 4.56s in it on Craigslist for around $200 and I'll be there in a heartbeat!

im noticing Explorers are in every JY ive been to. dirt cheap. definitely do your research on the axle codes before you go, but first thing i looked for was disc breaks(later model explorers) and the ones with the LSD in it had a tag for synthetic oil only on it! but i didnt do my homework on the axle codes for the confirmation of gears and LSD before i went there, just scouting yards before the hunt

Yeah, my only issue is having to regear. I'm currently 4.56 and the 4.56 geared 8.8s are few and far between! However there are plenty of 4.56 d44s laying around in the back of Rodeos.

Regearing isn't that bad. That's why you joined a club, right? There's gotta be some member that can do it for cheap.

I actually may know a few guys who could help. I guess time will tell as to whether my YJ decides it wants to be with the elites on 35s+

a well built 44 can be just as strong as the 8.8s. if it is any bit convincing my dana 44 in the rear is the only thing i havent broken lol except for the gears but that was 100% due to my retartedness and a time constraint while setting up gears

If you haven't broken it I'm convinced I would be okay! Haha. Honestly I think I wanna do it all at one time. When I get another car to dd and have the money to go ahead a link it, and throw some coil-overs under it. I'll likely be out of college before I get to that point.

This is a home made skid with plans done by Craignheather.com but looks like the website is no longer active... Its stout and works great.. If you are really interested I can get the dimensions for you

EDIT: New site with all the plans... http://www.4x4trax.net/

Anti, this was you fault!

I just bought one of those oil pan skid plates.
$17 bucks shipping almost busted the deal, though.

Although, I maybe a little late...
