Wait, explorers came with 4.56s? There's easily 2 dozen of them at my local yard and not a single one is 4.56. I thought only rangers got the steep gear ratio for the off road package?

See I read that because I took a screen shot of it before I went to the yard to look. I take that as meaning it only came on rangers? And I read somewhere else it was only on dealer optioned Off road package rangers.

I thought that since it was under the explorer section that it was concerning the explorers.

I have been wrong though

It's cool I'd love to see one myself. I crawled under so many explorers, and pried open a crap ton of doors just to end up saying f*** it, and having an 8.8 built with 3.07 gears.

That would be the "golden axle". Talked about but seldom seen. From my reading it's a Ranger FX4 from certain years and with some specific options including a 31 spline 8.8 with 4.56 gears.

It was a pipe dream to find one, but I'm strangely satisfied with my 307s. My buddy has a decently built rubicon and I have no problems keeping up with him

Sorry to revisit yesterdays conversation, but it sucks even worse when they use a different actor in the lead role! Even though Connery was the best, the Bond films may be the exception - and I'm hoping the Bourne sequel is too. Guess that doesn't count though, the new guy isn't Bourne.....

So...Been driving the YJ as a daily driver for about 3 months(my DD, a van...oh man, blown engine??)
The 1st time it has been used as such in 10 years.
I am getting about 16 mpg with mixed 70-/30, city/hiway driving. The same as it was when new to me in 1997.
It has 168,000 miles on it and is running like a new car.
I look at all those poor souls driving those prius's or the like and feel so much better.

And now it is gonna snow 6 inches.

I LOVE my Jeep...
