Convince me to spend the money. Someone listed this locally on Craig's list for $300obo. Keep in mind I have a dana 35 rear currently:

Im Selling A Ford 8.8 Out A V8 Explorer Disc Brakes. Had It Under My Wrangler For 3 Years And Only Ever Had To Put Brakes On It. I Completely Rebuilt It Before I Swapped It in. Installed Yukon 4.10 Gear Ratio And New Limited Slip Clutches And Always Ran The Trak Lok Oil. Along With New Bearings And Seals. It Does Need A Few Wheel Studs And The Carrier Has Been Light Damaged Before I Got It. But Is Painted And Good Shape. Also Incudes Bullet Proof Diff Cover
I text the guy and he still has it. I ask him why he's getting rid of it, he says he wants a 14 bolt one. Am I nuts for passing on this? As near as I can tell that set up would cost me at least $600 if I found one in a junk yard.

Get it! I paid $600 for mine w/ new gears and locker. Came with perches shock tabs and ubolts though. Make sure you get the flange bolts with it. They're semi hard to find.

Is it setup for a YJ? Spring under? If so I'd be all over it. I spent $5-600 on mine with free welding from a buddy.

You'll have to adapt it to fit your pinion angle. Its more expensive than what you can find in the junkyard already.

Wouldn't I have to adapt the pinion angle of any 8.8 I would find in the Junkyard too?

That's my point. What makes this worth so much more than a junkyard axle? I mean, if you want it then get it. Personally I would trust the backlash on a junkyard explorer with low miles than any rebuilt on Craigslist. Besides, why is the carrier damaged? Why not just throw in a new one if you're going to not only rebuild the clutch packs but also do seals and bearings? It just smells fishy and I'm just trying to look out for you.

That's a good point about the carrier. I may go look at it and see exactly how damaged the carrier is. Maybe he's being overly honest and there is slight damage not worth worrying about or MAYBE he blew some gears up in it and it's not worth a darn. I'm hoping for the first guess.

What does an axle cost you at a junkyard? Do you have half off days?

Hey, i know this is non technical but I like it over here more than anyof the other threads.

Question:

Transfer case is whining/humming while under power. fluid is full and clean. Is this because of bad bearings or chain?

Skip on the axle. LS 8.8 with disks s/b easy enough to find for about half that AND you don't have to worry about the PO on a stock insurance total. Fishy IMO

Side note: drove 11 hours to Idaho today taking my kid back to college. While on the way a huge Mickey Mouse popped up from behind a cloud bank to say HI!

It's either Mickey or Pedo Bear. Not sure which.
