Could have sworn the 242 is part time 4x4 whereas the 249 is the AWD option.

I saw a YJ at Walmart today that had a sticker on it that read " its a TJ thing you wouldn't understand". The owner was getting out of it at the time so I walked by and said "nice TJ" he said "Thanks Dude!! I put a lot of time into her to make her nice".
I wished I would of got a pic it was a driving hardware store with towel racks for a push bar and home heating louvers cut out in the hood. Chicken wire for light guards and chrome stickers all over everything.
I chuckled and got in my truck, he didn't catch my sarcasm.

Full time and awd are the same. Part time is the new lingo for 4 high.

The 242 has 2wd, 4 full time, 4 part time, and 4 low.

It essentially just adds an AWD option in addition to the standard ranges the 231 has.

I can confirm that the 242 is the part time and full time 4WD with a part-time 4LO. This is what I had yanked out of an '88 XJ for use in my YJ. I love this option for two reasons; 1, in the winter I can shift to full time 4WD for when I have patches of ice and snow on the roads, and 2, to use when I am climbing or driving on a sandstone shelf to prevent driveline binding.

If I remember correctly, the 249 is only a full-time and does not have a 4LO option, but I will let the experts chime in on this.

Edit: This is what I had pulled up on the 'net, and I was correct;

"The NP-249 which is a full-time transfer-case that utilizes a viscous coupling to act as a limited-slip betweed the front and rear driveshaft. One of the main drawbacks of the '93-95 ZJ version of this case is the lack of a low-range lock. In other words, if you get into a sticky situation and need both driveshafts turning to get you through, this transfer-case will only act as a limited-slip and not mechanically lock the two driveshaft to turn in unison."

The VC goes out a lot on the awd Transfer cases. Stick to the 231j with bits of the 231c to beef it up.

It has low gear, I have one in my 96 ZJ.

I get mixed reviews saying that the NP231 is a weak transfercase and the moment I get a little giddy with the skinny pedal behind a v8 is when it will blend the internals, yet others have told me it's perfectly fine to use behind the V8.

All about that unibody life.

Mine has held up so far, and I have been taking advantage of the power I wish I would have listened to Anti and done the wide chain/planetary from a 231c while I had it apart, and I still plan to, but I think it will be fine. I think worst case ill stretch the chain first. I dont think my rear tires like me right now. Youll be fine

So perhaps I should just do the wide chain upgrade while I am at it since it's all out of the Jeep, and will be awhile before things start going back together.

Actually looking forward to putting a spotlessly clean and freshly Monstalined Jeep back together

Dont forget the 6 pinion planetary.

Speaking of, my buddy has a wrecked 94 blazer with an np233. Is it useless to me? I hoped it would have the 231c.
