Xj tranny in a yj

Alright so my yj clutch is about to take a dump on me (internal slave) and I've been thinking about how to fix the situation. I've got two, 2wd xjs that I do not use, one is a 1998 and one is a earlier 90s model, not sure exactly, they both have auto trannys. And I had a random though of swapping those into my 1990 4.2 yj. Would this work? Or would it not even be worth messing with?

My jeep at one time had an auto tranny, but someone swapped it over. (It's still registered as an auto)

Im not sure about the autos but I know if you switch a 4wd manual ax15 from a cherokee to a yj you have to clock the output flange so the transfer case sits right.

Sorry I couldnt be of more help

its been done before, search on AW4 in YJ or TJ. There's lots of write ups.
It works well, the AW4 is about an inch longer than the AX15, you'll need to extend/shorten the drive shafts, rework the transmission mounts and splice in the transmission controller.

The only thing bad about the about it was that the 1st and 2nd gear are in the same thing kind of so it actually goes 1st to 3rd second gear is controlled by the computer so if you put it in 1st when your off roading with the computer it will shift into 2nd. But I would suggest wiring it up if you can

I wouldn't even think of doing that swap... 2wd auto tran would have to come completely apart and have the output shaft changed... not a good swap at all... look for a 4wd trans and yeah a much better choice.
