Wont go into gear
Hi guys. New jeep owner here. I bought a 93 YJ about 2 weeks ago. Red, 4.0L, very good exterior. I've really been enjoying driving it the past few weeks and have a few things planned for it already.
Last night (thankfully right in front of my house), I was trying to shift into 2nd gear and it wouldn't take. Pulled into my parking spot and tried to shift again, no go. Tried all kinds of shift combos and still nothing. When I try to shift into a gear it feels as if the clutch isn't engaged. This just happened out of the blue, no problems with the clutch/trans before now. I wanted some opinions on what to look for. I'm decently mechanically inclined. Thanks

Without being able to check it in person ..
How does the clutch peddle feel? Can you shift when the engine is off, and no load on the drive-train? If you can't shift with no load on drivetrain and without clutch, then it might just be your tranny.

NaeKid,
The clutch pedal feels completely normal, I'll try your other suggestion when I get back home tonight. Could there a clutch cable or assembly that may be stuck/broke? |

The clutch is hydrolic .. meaning that you push on the peddle, it activates the master cylinder which then flows fluid to the slave which then activates the clutch itself.
If the peddle acts normal, and the shift lever doesn't allow for proper movement even when the clutch is not required, then the problem is most likely a tranny issue. Some things to check there are fluid levels, cleanliness .. and if both those pass the test, then it sounds like the tranny may need new syncros .. which is something I hear come up over and over again. GuitarGuru has pulled his tranny apart and put new syncros in .. hopefully he will notice this message and be able to give you a little more info on how he did it.

its probobly your clutch fluid level, the housing should be on the pasanger side near the firewall behind the airbox. thats what it was for me. use dot 3 brake fluid.

if it happened suddenly, id suspect the clutch over the synchros. low fluid, air in the lines, or bent fork... the synchros tend to get worse over an extended period of time. not just *poof*, but in hte case that they are, trying shifting at about 3 and a half grand, thats about the point that i dont get any grinding, and i have bad synchros

I'll check the fluid level when I get home.
Loopy - It did happen suddenly. One minute I was shifting through all the gears just fine, and the next, no gear will engage at all. |

check the resevoir and if its low then take some dot3 and pump you r clutch about 15-20 times till it starts to comeback alive. pump it more than u think it needs. that'll get u by until u can fix the leak. this happened to me once down in the middle of nowher in Fla, and i was lucky enough to be by a gas station. i bought a can of the dot3 for fricken $10. i didn't ever have a problem with it after that cus i always filled the resevoir up at every oil change.

Yeah I've got bad synchros too in my 94 YJ with 119,300 miles. I'm not going to fix it, I'm just gonna buy a rebuilt AX-5 and swap them out. Anyone want my old AX-5?
