Wiper armature alignment

My driver's side wiper has never worked properly. We dropped the winshield and noted that the motor is moving the armature, but the knob that is seated in the armature pops out as the wiper pivot hits the stop. It seems like everytime the stop is hit on either end of the pivot, the knob pops out of the armature. Are those stops really necessary? Can I just grind them down?
