Why Windshield spreaders?

My jeep didn't have spreaders on it so I went to ebay and picked some up for 20$. Now my dash makes all kinds of squeaking noises. What is the point of them? They tie into your windshield frame that won't hold up in a roll over. I only put them on to make it easier for people to get in. Just wondered why I would need them?

They probably saved this kid's life:

That windshield probably would have bent right on back and crushed the OP's son.

They added them to the CJ design for a reason.

The windshield does hold up. "The sum of the parts is greater than the strength of the individuals."

These pictures say it all. Without those little bars up there that windshield would have folded in half so fast the jeep would be pivoting on your head while it rolled
