Why to replace your u-joints

As this happen to me tonight. Did a little damage to the muffler, but I'm hoping it's just that and a new tail shaft

So is that what caused it? It was lose from the rear end, but it has already snapped the tail shaft cone off and just hanging on the out put shaft
