Who's running a Spartan or Aussie in their D30?

Instead of going down a different path in a previous thread, I decided to make a more specific thread.

I'm 90+% certain I want to put a lunchbox locker up front in my 87. I'm running stock axles, 31's (maybe 32's at some point) and want to know who else is running a Spartan or Aussie locker in their D30? How is it holding up? Any explosions? Axle shaft issues? drive shaft issues? u-joint problems? Where is the weak link?

I've got a few friends who are saying to ditch the 30 and go 44, but I'm not sure I need to go that route. Aussie claims to sell about 1,000 lunchboxes for D30's a year. If the 30 is so weak, I would *think* that nobody is buying lockers for them and anybody who wants to lock 'em up is going 44 and forgetting about the 30, but obviously SOMEBODY is running a lunchbox in a 30 or Aussie wouldn't be selling them at a rate of 3 a day.

I have an Aussie in my D30 for six years now. I still have my vacuum disco, so it is totally invisible on pavement. The front driveshaft will turn constantly, but not really a problem, unless it's unbalanced. I run 35's. The only time I broke a u-joint was when I tried to back up while winching an XJ. U-joints don't like backing up under load.

I pretty much answered your Q in your other thread on lockers. On 31's or 32's your D30 is fine. It is a good axle, the only weak link being, as Ben said, are your u-joints. You have the smaller x260's. I run x760.

I am debating on running one in the D30 on my XJ (Already have one in the 8.25) However if I install it it'll be in there for a few months until I regear and go selectable. Then I would transfer it into my YJ

I ran an Aussie in my 95 YJ with 33/12.5's....it was awesome off road. It wasn't so fun on the road in light snowy conditions, but worked great on the road in the deep stuff.

I broke one front, passenger side axle shaft, with the Aussie...but that was more driver error than anything else. I was pinned up against a rut on a downhill slope, felt like I was going to tip, tried to turn and gas it, and the bind of the wheel against the rut, the turning and the torque cause the axle shaft to give....something had to I guess.

At any rate I wheeled more obstacles with the front Aussie than I ever did without it and only ever had that one issue....I loved it.

If your D30 is a high pinion I'd keep it, unless you're going to step up above a D44.

I have a Aussie in my D30, as mentioned above absolutely invisible in 2wheel mode. Pulls hard in 4wheel mode. The D30 is a good axle for up to 35" tires.

I've installed multiple of each brand, Aussie & Spartan in customers' Jeeps and I've never had an issue with either one.

Personally, I prefer the Spartan based solely on ease of installation.

I've installed two into buddies rigs and they have been wheeling them for a while. Liked them enough that when they upgrade they plan on using aussie again.

I have probably broken the ears off of 10 D30 shafts and one inner shaft. Some say its time for chromos but I just upgraded to TJ shafts and haven't had a problem yet
