Whirrring noise in 5th...lost all but 4th gear?

This morning my Jeep started making a loud whirrring noise when I shifted into 5th (I'd noticed some whirrring when in 1st & 2nd over the last few weeks but didn't think much of it). I shifted back to 4th as I was only going 45-50 MPH and the noise went away. As I approached a red light and began to slow down, I couldn't shift into a lower gear (3rd or 2nd) as the light turned green for me. I coasted into a parking lot and could not get the transmission into any gear with the engine running. When I let the clutch out with the tranny in Neutral, it made another louder whirrring noise so I turned the engine off, put it in Reverse and restarted the engine. As I released the clutch and tried to back out of the parking space there was a terrible grinding noise.

I was able to get home using a noisy 1st gear and a smooth, probemless 4th gear...the rest would only grind when you tried to shift into those gears. I haven't had a chance to pull the drain plug to inspect for shavings yet.

Does this sound like the tranny went out? If so, what are your recommendations for repair/replacement?

Have mine rebuilt? Buy a rebuilt tranny and if so from whom? Ebay??

Great timing, as I found out yesterday my furnace is bad and will be having it replaced today.

TIA

Sounds like the clutch or maybe the flywheel. Maybe something came apart in the tranny and is rumbling around inside of the tranny.

My Yj tranny just did the exact same thing, turned out to be the synchronizers, except mine got stuck in first gear, I would just replace the tranny, changing the synchros is more trouble than its worth.

It's a shot tranny. I just replaced mine a month ago. Same symptoms. Reason it doesnt do it in 4th....is because 4th is the only direct gear. All other gears are off the main shaft. 4th is 1:1 ratio.
If your willing to do the work, you can get reman trannies off ebay for a reasonable price. You have an AX-5 tranny for reference.

So....sorry to say...but your gonna need to do this....

common but i wouldnt say normal. It will eventually start poping out of gear. Took years before it got to that point on me though. The new reverse is smooth and no grinding whatsoever.
