where's the tach hookup?

I've read my haynes manual, and i've read my FSM. I can't find where the tach hooks up, or what it looks like.

The only electrical connection I can't seem to find a home for post-rebuild is round, has two wires coming from it (which are light green or tan and light blue -- I think, but I'm color blind so it could be anything!)

Though there are only two wires, there are 3 blade type female connections inside the round connector. There is a "wrap around clamshell" type part on the end of the connector which I suppose holds it on to wherever it goes. The clamshell jaws are around 1 to 2 inches long.

The blades are arranged going alternating directions. Ie one vertically, two horizontally.

Is this the tach hookup? Where is the tach hookup? Thanks!

I just rewired my Jeep and it soundds to me like you have got the right connector. Although I used a Painless kit. I kept my original wire harness cut off all of the quick connects and then connected it to the painless harness. I had to remove my Tach 2 weeks ago, and like I said what you described sounds like the right part. If it does help it should be on the left side of the steering column. Good luck

Can you describe where it plugs in, and what the opposing plug looks like (ie is it on some wires and moveable, or is it a box, etc)? By the left side of the column you mean as I look at the column? Thanks!

It will be a quick connector. Ok you have the plug off of the tach, it will attach to a plug that looks like it has a center piece that has some tabs on it. It is the same size around as the plug off of the Tach, but it is about twice as long. It should be off to the left side of the column (like if you where sitting in the seat). The colors I have are the following.

White/black
Green
Black

If yours is 91 or newer you might have a orange wire in place of the green

I hope this helps

I don't know what's wrong with me, but I just can't find this thing. Any more ideas on where the tach leads and I can trace it back? Thanks so much.

Ok that is the same as mine.

Ok I went and looked at mine and this is what I found.

Out of the Tach I have these color wires.

White
Green
orange w/ redstrip
Black

On the other side of the quick connector I have the following wire colors

Orange/ black
Green/ black
White/black
Black

The connector is about 1.5" - 2" Long. As long as you have the quick connector on the Tach then all you should have to do is find a connector up under your dash that isn't connected to anything. It should just be hanging around under there somewhere. I might not hurt to check the right side of the steering column also. I just depends on how the factory ran the wiring. Reach around and you should find a connector hopefully. I'm running out of ideas. I hope this helps you. Sorry i don't have a digital camera. This would help you out a lot. Let me know how it goes. Just so I know that I didn't leave you hanging.

I'm in Austin, texas.

OK, the wire that I have hanging loose has two wires coming from it -- I just asked a non-color blind person to look at it, and it's red and light blue.

This is so bizarre.

I definite am looking for an engine compartment thing -- I pulled the motor and tranny to do a rebuild, and that's the only connection I can't find a mate for. Do you have power steering? If so could you see if there are any wires on the power steering hookup (thinking that this is perhaps unused, and my tach problem is due to something else? ACK!

Your Tach isn't run off of your Power Steering. Ok is this in the Dash or the Engine compartment??? If it is in the engine compartment, then the only place that I can think that the connector would go is to the Distributor area. At least on my Small Block Chevy the Tach is hooked up to the Distributor.

None of my wiring diagrams show any wires that are of that color. I'm sorry but I just don't think that I can help out any more I'm drawing a blacnk since I no longer have my original motor in place. Good Luck with this head banger

Communication breakdown!

OK -- I've got a loose wire (described above) and also my tach doesn't work. I thought perhaps they were connected. I'm now thinking perhaps the loose wire goes to something that my jeep isn't equipped with, like power steering.

I read the FSM and the tach supposedly hooks to the powertrain control module, (or somethign like that, I left it outside).

I dunno. I'll post if I figure anything else out.

actually the tach goes to the ignition module on the 2.5 which is part of the coil. find the green wire on the coil and trace it back until you find the connection you need. there should be two quick connects at the coil, one 2 prong and one 3 prong. the 3 prong is the one that has the green wire in it. the wire should pass through fire wall in the big connector behind the fuse box on the driver side where it will become a green/white stripe wire. the colors are based on both haynes and chilton's but i can verify that they're correct on my 88. hmm. OK just looked at the coil.

There are three openings for quick connects.

Top has nothing in it.
Middle has only the bottom wire coming out. Looks like there might have been a top wire, but is hard to say if it did anything. Perhaps previous owner cut it.
Bottom is complete and plugged in.

But you're saying your coil has nothing in the top slot, correct?

OK, if this is the case, I'm chasing nothing looking for the connection for this round quick connect which is just behind the carb, has three female blade connectors aranged like

| _ |

...

Assuming that I have everything hooked up correctly at the coil, and my tach isn't working, is it possible that the crank sensor is out? Will a jeep run at all with the CPS out?

Thanks
