There was a club run yesterday, and my son wanted to take his YJ on it's "maiden voyage". (for him anyway!) It was his FIRST run as a driver. He AND the YJ were awesome. We did a trail listed as "difficult" in a few of the guide books, and he walked right through it with VERY few bypasses. His was the only YJ, and several people commented about the "older Jeep" and how well it did.
We'll be swapping out the 3:07s in a few months for some 4:10s, but I think we'll leave the diffs open due to having snow here AND he's still running a Dana 35.
That looks like it must be near Sedona. What trail was it? I'm looking for good trails to go with my buddies (we have a tentative wheeling trip planned).

Yeah, he's hooked big time!
Unfortunately, he has his dad's "taste" in parts but not the income for it.
He works hard, buys his own gas and make his Jeep payment. I "help" some with the parts and we split the labor. It's been a fun project so far.

Lock the front axel and leave the dissconnect and you'll get much better traction without having to deal with the ends trying to swap places like a lunchbox rear in snow.

I agree, front locker is the only way to go if you have a DD/Weekend Warrior rig, lucky for me my Jeep came pretty loaded from the factory, so I have as limited slip in the rear. It already pulls like a mountain (also has 3.55's so that helps a bit), and with a locker up front I get giddy thinking about it sometimes
Anyway, since it seems you are on a budget so to speak (part time jobs for teenagers just don't fuel the habit well enough), you might look into the Aussie Locker.
For the price it's hard to beat, plus they are supposed to be indestructable. Best part is that under normal driving conditions you won't even know it's there
