Wheel it... or build some more and then wheel it?

I have a dilemma... I have a 1995 YJ that I picked up in September 2009. I bought it because it was cheap, and I had plans to build it for a trail rig. So far, my specs are:

2.5L (160,000 miles)
5 Speed
AX-5
4" Skyjacker Lift
3/8" Boom Shackles
Dana 30 (regeared to 4.88)
Ford 8.8 (regeared to 4.88)
Front Tube Fenders
Rear Full Corner Guards
Rocker Guards
Warn Front Bumper
Garvin Swingout Rear Bumper
BFG KM2 35's

Here's the dilemma... I don't wheel it as hard as I'd like due to the AX5 and overall weakness of the 2.5L. It is a very capable rig, but I baby it when I'm out. Should I just grow a sack... and wheel the heck out of it until it breaks then upgrade, or do you agree that it I should take it easy since breakage is inevitable?

I did the 8.8, 35's and 4.88's with long term in mind (thinking of V8 Swap or 4.3L), but there are still several weak links in the drivetrain that I cannot afford to do right away (three kids 4 years old and under!). Anyway... thoughts anyone?

You should just wheel it. Plenty of people are wheeling rigs with a lot less upgrades than yours. The 2.5 is underpowered but it isn't a bad motor, and I doubt you are gonna frag your tranny. You should just wheel it as hard as you like and I bet your Heep will surprise you.

Thanks Chicalibro3... this is the first 4 cyl that I've ever wheeled. My last Jeep was a respectfully built 2000 Wrangler Sport and it was indestructible. I've only been around built Jeeps, and haven't ever experienced what a 4cyl can handle. At least if it breaks, it's not my daily driver!

The 2.5L is underpowered, but by no means an unreliable engine. Your right in thinking the AX-5 is your weakest link though. I say wheel it until the AX-5 goes, then swap in an AX-15 and wheel it some more.

correct me if im wrong... which i mostly likely am because im a jeep n00b here so yeah.

but i thought the AX-15 isn't compatible with the 4 banger and likewise. something about different bolt patterns.

i dunno...

Advanced adapters makes a adapter for it and eliminates the problem.

to the OP Burns95, read my specs in the sig line, we close to the same, wheel that B*tch plain and simple, do to her what you want, im thinking always bout upgrading my engine/trans but im not going to do it till the 2.5 gives up.

FYI i ran my 90 MJ with 2.5 for 319,000 miles and when i got rid of her, she was still running like a champ!

my plan is just a 4.0 swap from a xj or something similar, ax 15 and a rubi transfer case and then it will be sweet!

Wheel it. It's a Jeep... You're always going to "build some more".

I agree with those who say just wheel it and not worry about it. I've had the 2.5L myself for a few years and had lots of fun with it, went 4.0L only for the on road power (DD here). With the right gearing it's a great engine that will not cause problems whatsoever and will take you everywhere you want to go. The ax5 is indeed on the weak side but that is not a swap i would do if not necessary (if it doesn't break , i mean)
Just have fun and wheel it as hard as you need to have fun.

toss some recovery on it and wheel it. hit rocks, trails, shallow water and such.

stay the hell out of deep mud.....it sucks....will be cleaning it for weeks after....it breaks everything...at least this carolina clay we have down here does....lol

Concensus... Wheel it! The guys I run with are all 4.0l TJ's but on 33's with open diffs. (One JK on 37's with no regear nor axle upgrades so he will break before I do) I thought about the Ax15 swap if the ax5 goes. Much cheaper than a full drivetrain swap! The 2.5l is still going strong though, as strong as a 2.5l can be anyway
