x2. What do you want your console to do? You might want it to have different features than what I want mine to have.
Exactly. I completely transformed the PO's VDP deluxe console to accommodate my switches, cb and installed seat belt keepers (its a wide console) out of an old web belt the army gave me years ago. I just did some surgery on a cheap smittybilt locking tuffy knock off to make it work for a buddy last Saturday afternoon. For some, the ammo can works. I carry two of them with me in the back full of spare parts during big runs. It all comes down to what's important. For some its security and having a place to lock their belongings. For others its a set of cupholders and even still that armrest to anchor your elbow is beneficial to some other drivers.
I always recommend joining a club. If for nothing else, you can test out stuff like center consoles with your hands instead of imagining what it would look like outside that catalog.
After my THIRD stereo disappeared from the dash, i stumped up for a Tuffy. Had it 14 years and still recommend it.
Have my stereo in the front compartment, and the CB mounted inside the main box, on the side wall. Cut a notch for the mike when its needed, so i can close the lid. Storage seems limitless (at least in the YJ version).
BTW, I left the dash opening vacant, so crooks just think there is no stereo to take.
Whats the best aftermarket center console for our YJ's?
Now, what's best for you and your wallet? That's up to you. I went with a Tuffy knock off from eBay and have been satisfied with it for about 5 years now. A plus was that it was under $100 to the door.
