What is this and what does it do?

Can you help me identify the "vacuum" canister and connection on the front axle of my 1990 YJ.? Also, the connector does not want stay on. Is there a trick to making sure it stays connected?

that engages your front axle four 4wd. some of us take it off and use a cable to engage it.others put in later model jeep axles that eliminate the 2 piece axle completely

heres a view of the internals. the passender side is a 2 piece axle and the vac motor slides the collar that joins them back and forth

You'll see that referred to frequently here as the CAD. Central Axle Disconnect, the FAQ's have a whole section on it and how it functions.

That is your flux capacitor. It boosts HP with it on, and reduces it when in 4x4 to prevent damage to the drivetrain.

I hated the cable, tried 2 and they wouldn't adjust to tighten and stay engaged. IMO just lock it across or go with the 1 piece

i like the idea of a one piece axle if you run your diff either open or with an air or e-locker. but with a auto locker like a lock rite it sucks if your locked and try to turn, it really binds and pushes the front end
