What is this piece that melted?

My friends Jeep YJ caught fire under the hood against the firewall. He doesn't have an account here. We're trying to figure out what this piece is that caught on fire.

Thanks!

He took another picture of what burned off. It seems to be from some type of wiring. The part that melted off is from the red piece circled.

It plugs into the intake manifold. It is a vacuum line, not a wire. though I'm not completely sure what it's for. I'm not very confident, but im thinking that is where the t-case pulls it's vacuum from. Idk how the heck a vacuum line would catch fire though. ..

That vac line goes to one of the flaps that I think closes the cowl for defrost or heater. Just replace with some tubing but start at the back of the heater controls found in the dash.

if that is the vacuum hose, then there is only one that goes inside the cab... and it is for the heater/vent control.... it is used to control the the flapper door on the cowel..

It won't cost him anything to get a basic account on here. It does limit some options, but this is the best Jeep forum out there on the innerweb thing. It's worthwhile joining just to learn about Jeeps.

Invite him to join us on f12.

x2. Invite him. But there are some people without email addresses so it may not work.

was there 'fire', or it just smoked, ya guys got out and observed it all melted?

if there was 'fire', i'd be a little more pre-occupied with why a 'fire' started in my engine bay then what the heck that vacuum line controls.

Just my .02 - which isn't worth half that really.
