Sorry to hear about the trouble.

You got 241K miles out of an AX5 transmission - that's pretty darn good...

It sounds like you are frustrated because of all the other stuff that is breaking too.

The good thing about an older YJ Jeep is that they are pretty easy to work on...the bad thing is that you will have to work on them...

Sorry to hear about your troubles! Dont give up on the YJ's quite yet try a 6cyl with an AX15 and a nice OME lift and your mind will change.

That 4in RC lift is more of a downgrade than an upgrade... i know cuz im on a 2.5 in procomp and hate it LOL

It was a downgrade that's why I dumped it first chance I got, old oem springs ride better.

Will be on the lookout for a 6 cyl

It is a little frustrating because its constantly breaking down and money is always short. Also wish my wife and kids could enjoy it like I do.

Keep in mind your Jeep is 20 years old. Things are going to go wrong. It was also probably beat on a good bit which doesnt help eithier. I have a 95 2.5 ax5. I got 260,000 miles out of the first trans. 100,000 of those were with 33's and stock gearing. It would still be going if I had know water got in the trans during a hurricane we had. I got another trans for $100 and put it in. The next day I broke an exhaust valve. I got another 2.5 and put it in. I like the 2.5. With that said I just came accross a 98 4.0 with 60,000 miles on it for free so a swap is in my future. But not until this 2.5 dies so it may be a few years. I currently have 287,xxx miles in the chassis and an engine and trans with 150,000 on them now. 130,000 when I put them in almost 4 months ago. I can also tell you with 260,000 on the engine I pulled the head to see what happened and it rained the cylinders help water for over 3 weeks before I emptied it. The valve punched a hole in the #2 pistion so it was scrap anyway. I have replaced the ignotion coil(it didnt go bad but was 20 years old so to me its preventitive. Other than that I was just religious about routine maintenence. I drive it 123 each way to and from work every day. Its the epitome of reliable if it is well maintained. I also take it out and beat on it pretty good just about every weekend.

I fully understand that it's 20years old. I bought it from a young girl in Rhode Island who had run off the road going 70mph on the highway. Turns out a motor mount broke and offset the entire driveline. The shifter was jammed against the tub as a result and wouldn't shift without a lot of muscle. She sold it to me for $300 thinking it had a blown tranny. New motor mount and a new leaf spring and she was ready to go.

It had 203,000 miles on the motor at the time, so I got 38,000 miles out of the tranny before it actually blew; so I guess I can't complain. And that's in 4 years time. I bought her stock, lifted it an inch, then 3 inches, then a 4 inch RC, it had 33s, 35s, then 31s, and now she's back to stock. Never been regeared so she's definately been abused all her life. I don't think the PO believed in oil changes either o.0

So I spent the better part of my 3 day weekend replacing the tranny. The wife sure was happy about that..

Went pretty smooth. The replacement AX5 shifts beautiful; only problem is it sounds like loose change. Could it be a bad throw out bearing? I didn't replace any parts during the swap with new ones. The throw out bearing sounded horrible by hand on the tranny I took off and the slave was leaking so I just used the slave/bearing on the replacement tranny which wasn't leaking and sounded good by hand.

Other than that it drives good and ill be cracking into the old tranny to see what broke and ill post pics

Your original problem sounds a lot like an issue I had with my AX15. I was on the highway tried to shift from 5th to 4th for a steep hill, trans went into neutral, but then could not shift into any gear at all.

Turns out that the 5th gear cracked and would not disengage. Pain in the butt, but it turned out to be a really easy fix. The 5th gear cluster on the AX15 is seperate from the other 4 forward gears so I only had to disassemble the 5th gear cluster and replace it. I know there are some similarities between the AX5 and the AX15, but I don't know if the 5th gear set up is the same.

Good luck, maybe its time to buy something for everyday while you fix up the YJ.

Whenever my wife comments that the Jeep is a money pit, I fall back on the Safety argument. Currently, I'm slowly building a case that our stock springs are over 20 years old and "unsafe" and that buying a new set of springs, upgrading to "safer" shackles, and replacing the brake lines is the safest thing we can do. In your case, if it's $1000 to rebuild the trans, find a used AX-15 for $500-$600 and show her how you're saving $400!..

That, or I'll bump the current offer from $301.00 to $400. plush shipping. I don't mind the 2.5 Ax5... running or not.

One Last Thing: Go Topless Day and you had your full top on??

Good luck either way. I love my 2.5/ax5, but it has failed smog every year (new cat, etc.) since I got it, tossed three fuel pumps, currently the internal f-ing slave cylinder is fritzed, and it continually provides me with "opportunities" to learn more about it. After four years I still haven't lifted it, and it looks like a low rider compared to a jk. But....I dig that damn thing.

Like I said, good luck. I'd miss it if I sold it, but so far its spent more time as yard art than an actual moving vehicle. I do believe that's indemic to owning a YJ....and why I fix the YJ and a speed shop fixes my GTi.

If I were to make it safer, I'd be doing a frame off restoration!!

I put the spare AX5 in but it sounds like loose change as well. At least she drives!

And I put the top back up for the 2hr tow home, she didn't deserve to be topless anymore
