What factory gear ratio do I have?

Hi,

What is the factory gear ratio of a '95 Wrangler 2.5? Anybody know?

Thx!

I contacted 4wheel parts about this and I was told that the 2.5's come with 4.10 gears. I have a set of 31X10.50's and 5th gear is pretty tough to get to. They recommend 4.56 gears for me. If you are going to go with larger tires, you may want to see what the best gears are for you. I have to trust those guys because I could not find any numbers for myself. No tags or anything on the rear or differential housing. If I am wrong, sorry.

Anyone else have anything?

The 5 speeds came with 4:10 gears, but the automatics came with 3:73 gears. You didn't say if your 2.5 had 5 spd or auto. If you are going to run 31" tires (and never anything bigger), I would recommend 4:56 gears (with both trannys---the auto is undergeared from the factory----I know because that's what I presently have). If you think you might go bigger than 31" tires, I would go with the 4:88's. Without any gear change, you can get by, but you'll wear out the clutch faster (if 5 spd), and you'll probably never be able to use 5th gear on the highway. Remember, those 4:10 gears were for 205/75R15 - 215/75R15 tires (about 26-27") from the factory.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

My Jeep is a 5spd and I have been running size 31 tires for as long as I can remember. It never gave me any problems and it shifts like butter - even into 5th. I wanna get 32's or 33's as soon as these tires go out, but I guess I have to get new gears before I do that...

BTW - here is a table that shows you the best gear ratios for your Jeeps. It looks like you can go up to 33' with 4.11 ratio.

Does anybody have experience run bigger that 31 or 32 tires without swapping out gears?

Thanks,

33's will guarranty that you now will have a 4 speed 5th gear will be unusable. Off road performance will stll be very good.

I have a 92' 4cyl and 5sp. I also had 410's. I just ordered 488's. I don't think you will be happy with anything higher. Especially if you plan on running 33's.
