If I were to make a list, it would be multiple pages.

5 full tool boxes, 5 tool bags, ujoint & ball joint tools, fluids, 6 spare axle shafts, hubs, ujoints, spare front & rear drive shafts, c-clamps, welding material, electrical repair kit, blah blah blah.

A cell phone (where service is available) and a GPS for location info would be helpful to summon outside help, being as you specifically mentioned the safety aspect of things.

Here's one that not a lot of people think about. I had a CB mic go out on the trail last October so now I carry a spare.

If you were to spend 1-4 weeks at a time in Johnson Valley/Hammers, how many would you carry?

Chromo D60's, HP9's, 609's, D44's etc break like twigs on a regular basis.

Not just that though....I have 6 different axle shafts. Here's why.....

I run a prototype chromo Super88 kit. There has been a grand total of 1 axle shaft that has ever ben broken. Yes, one total, ever. I carry two, one for each side since they are different lengths, just like standard 8.8's.

For the front, I carry both short & long side inner & outer Warn chromo's already assembled. That's 4 more, plus 2 hubs.

Make sense now?

I think it pays to travel light and every Jeep will
be different for spares.
Keep in mind the more crap you bring, the harder it's
going to be to get up that trail.
Build the Jeep right for the type of wheeling you want
to do and spend more time driving than wrenching.
As far as safety goes, a good first aid kit, two fire ext.,
winch with tackle, and most important don't go wheeling alone.

I agree, we usually spend little time working on our own junk. Most of the folks I wheel with, do the same.

I can't count how many times I have helped others who are illprepared or have no idea how to fix their own issues.

I agree with Joe. You just can't be prepared enough. The hammer I carry is a machinist hammer. Half way between a sledge hammer and a framing hammer. Just incase something needs returned back to its rightful place. On board welder is important too incase your shackle hanger gets ripped off. I have even brought a spare t-case for parts. Having a tow rig with room for more parts is alway good. I had a friend break a link on his tj, ratchet straps and duct tape got us out. Tire repair kit is a good one to throw in as well. I could go on and on.

You must have no idea whatsoever as to how Johnson Valley/Hammers is layed-out, and never been there.

That trail is ~1/2 mile long and ~3 miles from camp. Usually 3 or 4 of us don't bring spare tires while a few others do. That day, I didn't bring a spare tire while others with the exact same tire did. We perpare as a group.

I keep my spare tire of course, jack, recovery strap, a folding shovel, saw, tools (metric and standard scokets including torx bits, ratchets, wreches, vice grips, torque wrench (beam style0, screwdrivers, etc), potable air compressor, and jumper cables and battery jump pack. I am planning to get a hi-lift jack soon as well. I also keep a few extra u-joints incase I need to swap out one of the aging stock ones I am too lazy to do, and I recommend you too keep spares of any parts you know may need soon replacing as if it is gonna go, wheeling will help it wear out quicker.

In addition to this, I keep bottled water for various uses, extra oil, brake fluid as I have a small clutch leak, other various fluids, a rain poncho, gloves, a flashlight, a knife, lighters, a first aid kit, and my cell phone. Also, I make sure to bring my repair manual as it can allways come in handy when a problem arises. Lastly, on the floor between the door and my seat I keep a fire extuniguisher just in case.
