what is this dash cutout for?
Anyone have any idea what goes here? There is also a small light hanging behind the dash that clips into a connector near this cutout, but it doesn't light up ever.

That's no switch, its a hole for a light. I have it on my YJ. Its got a little light up there (the one you found behind the dash) that lights up the switches for my hardtop that go in the blank area on your YJ.

WOAHHH.... Ya learn somethin new everyday. That I did not see coming. I have the hard top and defroster switch but no light in a hole like that. BUT, years and models could be different with features like this.

Yeah mine has the same cutout, however the factory bulb is just clear, on mine it appears that the small lense that is mounted to the bulb holder is tinted the same green color as the factory dash lights.
I was suprised to learn that my Heater controls have a light that will illuminate them at night. I was cleaning up all the accumulated dirt and such behind the dash board one day and found the bulb for it was burned out.

I have a light in that spot for the hard top controls as well (defrost and wiper). It's definitely stock. It isn't blue though, and the bulb has since burned out. I don't have much use for it anyways since I don't use the switches now that I've had to replace the broken rear window.

I got a light there for my factory fog light switch to light it at night. It's greenish. Wish I had a light for my headlight switch. If I am not mistaken, there is a small green plastic piece as a cover.

That hole is for a light that illuminates the switches that can go there.
