What is this box, LED and button?

I took the dash out around the steering column and found this there... it has a red LED and a push button type thing attached to one side and a huge wire harness in the other side... It doesnt say what it is on the box itself. Any ideas?

Additionally, you can see the red switch to the right in pic #3 for my windshield mounted lights - I think I shorted it somehow - the button popped and will not reset (it feels springy like a ground fault circuit). Do I need a new switch or is there a way to reset it?

aftermarket alarm system

follow the wiring and see if there's a relay wired in there somewhere? if not, you can pull it out, if there is a relay, thats the starter kill.. have to trace it and reconnect the factory starter wiring back together

Do you have 'Cruise Control'. I found a box of the same size but no light or push button. I see there are two fuses attached as well. The box I found is the Cruise Control box that the P.O. Installed an aftermarket type. It too has exactly two fuses. But this is just my stab at it. Hope you find out why because that LED and Button thing is the mystery to me. Sorry

Edit: wow people post quicker than I do when their is a brand new post. I think I'll agree with them. ^^^

The push button is probably an alarm over-ride of some sort. Like an ignition kill over-ride. Just a guess.

Hey guys thanks for responding... the PO had an alarm installed - useless if you ask me... I do have the remote and it sets fine. but what the hell is the black push button looking thing attached to it??

As for a relay... not sure I know what I am looking for?

The button is an over-ride most after market alarms have one. You might not find a relay. But if you do it should be a square block with a tab and 4 connection for wires. Or it could be hooked up just to the horn.

Most of those aftermarket alarm systems incorporate a "starter disable" feature. The button is an over-ride switch that will allow the starter to be engaged (bypassing the disable feature) by turning the key to the "on/run" position, pushing the button, then turning the key to the "start" position. The LED should be dash mounted & flash when the alarm is in use.

Thanks guys... I will dash mount that light and start to use the alarm sparingly as I have confirmed it does have an ignition kill.

My second question was about the red switch you can see in the pics (#3 I think)... I have blown the switch so I purchased a new one but the off-road lights hooked up to them dont work since the switch fried and I am thinking there must be a fuse that I blew. Is it common for there to be a fuse rather than just wiring them straight through? Would it be behind the dash or near the battery??

Did you wire those lights? If not then you'll have to trace the wires all the way and look for a blown fuse.

If you did replace the switch and wired everything back correctly and it still didn't work, it has to be a fuse or blown bulbs. Use the poker thing with a lightbulb in it and check for power in the wires going to the switch/lights.

I think I've got that same alarm. I'll look when I get home, I believe I still have the manual for it as well.

I can't be sure, but if you hit the button, does the Jeep disappear? It could be a cloaking device.

My guess would also be an alarm system. I found one unplugged under my dash as well. When I plugged it in the alarm went off so I cut it off.

I didnt wire the lights, the PO did. I will be taking the dash apart to install white gauges this weekend so I will just trace the wires the best I can - I am sure there must be a fuse that is blown somewhere along the line. I will use the "poker thing" and see if its live now.
