I'm experiencing a weird problem with my 90 YJ at times when I start it and press the gas there is just a lack of power and the RPM never get over 1,000. Its like bogging down or something. But the weird part is often if I shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes and start it back up it runns perfectly and accelerates normal. This condition not only happens when the engine is cold but also happens if I've been driving around. What ya think the problem is??? Bad Cat, Carb???? I'm still running the stock carter but it has always ran well until the last few weeks. I seem to think its something to do with the exhaust because the cat gets red if I hold on the gas with it running funky but I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same problem before I go waste $$ on un needed parts
Yeah I'd say that would be the Cat. Especially if it goes red. Pieces can get lodged in your exhaust and cause blockage. If you shut it down and restart and it runs fine thats probably because the piece floating around is not clogging the pipe anymore and probably settled down towards the bottom of the cat or got stuck under something. Restarting it can then adjatate the piece again and have it clog your exhaust again. If you only need to pass a visual inspection just take the cat out and beat the contents of it out with a broom stick or something untill you have some money to buy a high-flow cat.
it's possible that it's the cat, but i'd have a look at the choke as well. i'm no expert on the carbs, but that sounds like the choke isn't releasing all the time and you're running REALLY rich because of it. when you shut it off and restart it then the choke resets itself and all it well. all that partially burned gas getting to the cat will cause it to glow like that. I'm not sure how the choke operates when warm though so i wouldn't rule out the cat either. given the cost of a new cat through, it can't hurt to look into it

yeah i had the same problem with my 90 yj and it ended up being the ECM. There made by motorola and they are used in fords too and most of all they are known for going bad. I put a new one in my car and it idles good i have better pickup and over all better performance. just something to look into

Well pulled her out today and it doing the same thing. Checked the choke and its not stuck shut and there is still a lack of power. I still have to try the ECM thing. The exhaust if horrible smells like crap. If anyone has any other ideas let me know. I guess if the ECM swap doesn't do anything all there is left is the cat.
