Definitely going to be adding this upgarde. Wouldn't it be better to switch the stock air cleaner to the new one supplied with the kit?

I think the filter supplied with the kit is better. Be when I installed my carb I still had emissions testing so I had to have everything hooked up. Since that time I have become exempt from testing and have ditched the stock air cleaner.

Not sure where a model number would be. Your best bet would be to snap a pic or two of it and start a thread asking for someone to help you identify it.

When I first installed my Weber I did it without the fuel regulator and it starts and idles, still needs tuning though. THis weekend I put on the fuel regulator and it would not start, like it is starved for fuel. Could that be a mixture issue since I don't have it completely tuned?

That's what I've seen with people who run without the regulator in place first and then add it. I would recommend setting the carb to base line settings (mixture screw 2 1/2 turns out form seated, idle screw just slightly touching the throttle lever but not enough to move it) and then tune the carb, should work better. Also do you have the regulator in line between the filter and the carb?

I have also heard that making sure the fuel return is above the fuel output to the cab on the fuel filter can help.

Got the weber on the jeep and ripped off all of the vac lines and smog control. This is the best thing that has been done to the YJ, runs like a top. Love the sound of the weber when you floor it.

Thank you for all the great help in this post you guys are awesome! I recently took over my Dad's '81 Scrambler. He pretty much just did the minimal to keep it running. the 258 was rebuilt about 8yrs ago, but hasn't been driven very much probably 40k mi. I was getting about 7mpg, so I decided to make so upgrades. From 4wd.com I bought the W551 kit (32/36 DGEV), Borla Header, and DUI distributor and wires. So far I've install the header and carb but I'm having issues. I wanted to wait on the Distributor until the carb was fairly dialed in.

It will run badly, if I pump the gas. I've tried the Lean Best tunning, but eventually turned the idle mixture screw out 7 turns with out a major improvement. It sounds like it is starving for fuel. I noticed that when I close the choke butterflies it seem to run a slightly better. do you think I have a jetting issue or vacuum leak. This is my first time working on a carb, so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot beyond the suggestions in the documentation. I'm using the suggested Holley regulator from webercarbsdirect.com. It's installed after the fuel filter and the return line is connected. I also installed a new mechanical fuel pump just to be sure there wasn't a problem there. I'm getting about 3psi at the regulator and when I disconnected the line from the carb it pumps gas into a bottle pretty well when I crank it. I plugged the EGR line but didn't plate off the EGR valve yet. I've also made sure other vacuum hoses were plugged. Right now, I've only got the PCV valve, float bowl vent, and the vacuum advance hooked up. I'm going to call weber tech support tomorrow morning, but I have a feeling they won't be very helpful... Any advice would be much appreciated!!! I send some pics tomorrow.

I just bought an 87 YJ with the weber upgrade. I did not get to install it myself but the PO actually put the fuel regulator on the tank side of the fuel pump, I know WTF???!!! Anyway, i was just going to remove it because the Jeep runs fine without it anyway. I think the fuel pump is probably being starved for fuel with it regulating the fuel being drawn from the tank. I know I laugh about it everytime I think about it. BUT, if there is a good reason for it, do I NEED to install it on the carb side of the fuel pump??

Weber says that using more than 3PSI of fuel pressure will force a rich condition. I run one between the filter and the carb and have no problems, others do not have one in place, and still others run a fuel pressure regulator with no return line to the tank. All three setups have many people that the engine runs just fine for, so I don't think there is a definite answer out there that I know of. So it it runs well for you, you can keep it that way, your call.

Check for vacuum leaks first. Run through all your hoses you have hooked up and check them for cracks, if you have a doubt, replace it since hose is cheap. Also if you can keep it running for a min or two (or have a buddy keep it running) use a can of carb cleaner and spray the mounting plate of the carb and areas around it. If the engine speed picks up or it sounds to run better you may have found the leak. Try that first, then look at the jets.

ElvisV04290,
Doesn't it seem bass ackwards to have the regulator between the tank and fuel pump rather than between the fuel pump and the carb? It seems to me having the regulator between the tank and fuel pump would cause the fuel pump to be starved for fuel.
