So, since I got my wrangler a couple months ago, I find myself frequently waving to other wranglers as they drive by...
I have observed that while I started with a full hand wave, and sometimes went to a thumbs up kind of wave, I frequently got a two finger wave back. Kind of a victory wave back...
So, what is the story here?
Also, I just got back from camping in Maine, and have an older motorhome. Previously, I had been towing my Lincoln MKX suv behind the motorhome, but since I now have a wrangler, it clearly means I tow that.
Here is my question, if I am driving the motorhome, and towing the wrangler, do I still wave? After all, I am driving and the wrangler is under my control. Clearly no one else is driving it.
When I wave from the motorhome to wrangler drivers, I frequently get confused looks, and sometimes waves back, but it is not the same...
I wouldn't wave just because no one will see the Jeep and they're just saying "whys this guy waving" LOL it's not a huge problem so I would just say don't let it bother you, just do what you want to do
Between the Jeep, the motorcycle and the boat, pretty much anytime I'm transporting myself somewhere, I'm waving LOL.
I say wave...the other drivers will figure it out once they see the Jeep in tow and if they don't, they'll just think you're friendly, which *most* Jeep people are anyways.
I find myself waving no matter what I'm driving...
I stopped waving at 4 door JK's unless they're built. Even then I normally don't get a wave back. They're probably pissed because they have more in their tires and lift than I do in my whole Jeep. LOL
I'm almost to this point. My kids have even remarked how JKs don't wave back. The highlight of my kids day is when a jeeper waves back.
I can say, from my experience, YJs owners always wave, maybe 80% of the TJs wave, and maybe 10% of the JKs wave. But I'm thinking it's because JKs are getting to be trendy.
I understand where your coming from lol. I wave and get waved back alot in my jeep but when I am in my truck I dont get any waves. Its just a thing I guess. Sometimes I will be at a red light in my jeep and look in my review and see a jeep behind me and they wave so I stick my hand out the roof. There was one time where I had the top down and it started raining so at a red light I pulled the parking break and jumped up to put my top down and a fellow jeeper gave me the wave and started laughing a bit since it was pouring rain out of know where.
I follow the mantra that the smaller Jeep waves first. Since mine is usually the bigger one, I wave second. I never wave from my WJ. I don't think people know it's a Jeep, even on 32's. One day when I get the 6.5" lift and 35's I'll see if other Jeeps wave.
I only wave at CJ YJ TJ and built XJ and MJ. I only wave at a JK if they wave 1st. (Which is never)
I did wave at JK's at 1st, but they must not see me with there top on, doors on, windows rolled up blasting there A/C on a beautiful sunny day! :grin2:
Just cause you own one doesn't mean you understand....
I wave at any CJ/YJ and occasionally a TJ if I doesn't have chrome or other stupid things, and any pre-1986 jeep product, and any XJ that waves at me.
This generally corresponds with those people who get it.
Oh, and there's a couple pretty cute 20-somethings locally who have lifted JKs that always throw a wave, and I try to make sure I wave back LOL
I don't know if they get it or not but either way it's not from me. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Kinda reminds me of the goofy "low side" wave some people think is required if you ride a motorcycle. I would wave normally myself. Sometimes they wave back, sometimes they look at you like you're retarded or something. I stopped waving and started just enjoying the ride. I don't care who they are anyway.
I drive a 95 YJ and I get mostly get waves from the "beater" Jeeps (you know... the real Jeeps) and the occasional JK. I'm a southern transplant in upstate NY so my southern roots almost make it a requirement to wave. So far, no one-finger waves back. Lol. My dad used give everybody that four-finder wave without letting go of his steering wheel. I remember thinking "damn, my dad knows everybody!" I finally figured out it was an old south thing.
This may be a topic that comes up over and over, but for us newbies to jeeping, I find this thread most illuminating since I was told all jeepers wave to each other and it was a rule that I must wave at all jeeps. But after spending three days touring around a national park this week in a jeep waving at all jeeps, I found it odd that not one 4-door jeep waved back. Guess it is not a jeep thing, but a cj/yj/tj thang....

Actually it IS a jeep thang... but the 4-door subset is made predominantly of those folks after an SUV or to be cool or a soccer mom rig or whatever and less into doing it themselves.
The hands-on drivers are jeepers who wave because they feel like they belong to something. Hands on jeepers eschew the glitz and chrome and molded vinyl. Plus it's hard for most of us to drop $40K+ and then drive it like we stole it!
I theorize less folks would do the jeep wave if the 4DJs did because it's less of a brand phenomenon than it is a societal cliche of like minded individuals, and usually the 4DJs don't view themselves belonging to something. I mean most jeepers won't wave at a lifted and chromed out 3/4 ton Chevy either. Golf drivers never waved at me in my 68 Beetle either.
What's up with chrome dissing, fish? I love that my jeep has wide flares and is chromed out, instead of the chopped off fenders and current trendy flat black that I see all around me. Would you not wave at me?

I would definitely wave at you. I'm not a fan of chrome on jeeps though. There's actually a lot of reasons for that, believe it or not. While I'm not a fan of your bumper, your jeep ain't goofed-out chrome.
The primary reason is a disdain for the 'look-at-me' mentality that drives a lot of it. I mean, I LIKE all the chrome on my 1972 Standard Japanese Motorcycle. It doesn't stick out though. Doesn't say 'look at me,' it's sortof expected and is just there. I don't like murdered out flat black either, but that's just a preference.
At the core, most chrome things on jeeps bother me because companies chrome things because they sell! No additional performance, no thoughtful style, not artistically conceived as a highlight. They just look weird to me on a jeep. Jeeps weren't conceived to be shiny, they were conceived to be utilitarian and serve a purpose.
I mean I HATE 35s on a jeep with spaghetti thin axles- the big tires serve nothing but speak "wannabe" and "look at me," and absolutely no caster left on the thing. But then there's BigRedJeep: not my kinda jeep but holy cow I can admire it, appreciate its owner and what he can make it do. It's totally cool.
I see chrome on a jeep the same way as stupid tires on a stupid jeep instead of admirably big tires on a capable jeep. If the chrome doesn't serve a purpose? Why? I sold the chrome modulars that came on my DD almost immediately.
I'm not gonna dis you for your bumper, but maybe I would for a chrome 'grille.'
It bothers me the college kids who buy a jeep and one of the first things they say is they want to put a lift in but don't want to spend a lot of money. And a bumper. But after the stiff 4" springs and $1350 of wheels and tires they complain about the ride, and maybe have vibes, not even understanding how the whole system needs to work together to perform. And companies are glad to take their money and don't care the rig is gonna ride like a rock on a concrete pillow. Then they get a cold air intake and some toolbox stickers off eBay and some cool lights and the jeep still won't perform. So they buy a chrome tow bumper.
I do like the chrome door-top panel strip on the interior of CJ7 doors and chromed CJ speedo bezel and dash knobs if that saves my butt from flames of judgement? Lol
Mine was pretty rough when I got it, including hinges that needed replacing etc. As a Laredo, it already had some stock chrome that I didn't feel like replacing, and I thought black hardware would clash with the spice interior. So, stainless it is. If anyone around town or on the trails is doubting the functionality of my rig, they can always just look at the engine and suspension work I've done. Myself, btw. I guess I can understand bias against it though. I find those long LED bars that every kid installs on the windshield frame pretty pretentious, but I'm sure there are those that disagree with me about that.
I have a JKU Rubicon and I always wave, perhaps it is my heritage of also owning a YJ, a TJ and a CJ5. JK owners around me wave at about 50% frequency.
Where I live, I wave at everyone regardless of vehicle and most wave back. I've found that generally folks in vehicles 5 years old or newer don't wave at all with the exception of pickups obviously purchased for pulling horse trailers and equipment. I'm about an hour away from the closest gas station. In the city waving isn't a thing. When I had my first XJ I was in a different city and never noticed a specific Jeep wave back then. But as has been mentioned in this thread, waving is free, so why not. If y'all say it's a Jeep thing, I'll wave even more. Hell, I wave of give the thumbs up to any vehicle that looks like the owner has done work on and not just for attention sake... from BMWs to Broncos.
On a side note, I'm also a Volvo 240 fan/owner and give the wave to other Volvo 240 owners every time. Sometimes when I'm not in my 240 and I get an odd look. It's rare to see those type of vehicles in anything but stock condition, and probably only 20% of other drivers would wave back. So I'd say only 20% of 240 owners are actually enthusiastic about their vehicles. I used to wave at newer Volvo models but rarely was even noticed. Older models would almost always wave back. My wife has a 2001 Subaru forester and when she lived in California it was a thing for Forester owners to wave at each other, but never the Legacy owners. Apparently Foresters were uncommon in her area. Out here in Colorado they are everywhere though so it isn't a thing.
Seems like enthusiastic owners will notice the same vehicle as they drive and wave regardless of vehicle unless the region is saturated with that model. Jeep owners are on the whole more enthusiastic about their vehicles because most put extra time, money and effort into their vehicle.
