Waterpump tutorial

I went to my local Bennett Auto Supply store and got their help with the different Jeep waterpumps. They sell ASC Industries brand waterpumps, and they allowed me to get all the fitment info & take pictures of the parts. I wanted to show the differences between the models & the standard and reverse rotation impellers.

Here is what I found.

These CJ style waterpumps are NOT interchangeable with YJ pumps.
Fitment:
WP-583 = '83-'86 2.5L & '81-'86 4.2L Serpentine reverse rotation only
WP-584 = '83-'86 2.5L & '80-'86 4.2L V-belt standard rotation only
Notice the water pipe for the heater core supply is cast into the housing.
This pipe casting will not clear the A/C & alternator bracket on YJ models using the same engine as the CJ models that these pumps fit.
The last pic in this group shows the pipe to bracket clearance on a YJ.

These are AMC YJ water pumps, and are NOT interchangeable with Daimler-Chrysler YJ waterpumps.
Fitment:
WP-722 = '87-'90 2.5L & '87-'90 4.2L V-belt standard rotation only
WP-723 = '87-'90 2.5L & '87-'90 4.2L Serpentine reverse rotation only
Notice that the pump has a threaded hole for the heater supply pipe to be threaded into the pump.

The waterpump on the right, part #WP-853 is a reverse rotation pump for Daimler-Chrysler YJs
Fitment:
WP-853 = '91-'02 2.5L YJ & TJ models & '91-'99 4.0L YJ & TJ models
Notice the lower profile shaft.

I used to be in the auto repair business, and I have not only worked with these guys for almost 25 years, I am personal friends with most all of them as well. They were more than glad to assist me in assembling these pictures & specs. They're all really great guys who are true professionals!

I am sure they didn't mind because of your FATHER-IN-LAW! Remember the guy that they are all excited about because he's moving back to town??

Max,

Where can I get a replacement pipe coming out of the water pump and can this be installed/removed with the water pump on the engine or will it not clear when twisting?

I have never seen one available in the aftermarket. They may exist, but are apparently scarce if they do.

The return pipe is threaded. It must be installed with the pump removed.

Take the old one into NAPA, they have lengths of threaded pipe like that. That is where I got mine at least.

Thanks! Fixed it, sanded and painted. Too much of a prize item it seems to let go easy.

You can by the pipe from RockAuto Auto Parts

It's called a "Water Pump Inlet Tube"
DORMAN Part # 56398

Is there a way to tell if my water pump is reverse rotation without removing it? I see the lower profile and the possibilit of the R stamped on it, but really don't have anything to compare it to while it's mounted. Thanks.
