Watch this vid...

My YJ has the same noise as this video.


Dosent knock going backwards but does it forwards. i have a Detroit locker in a D35.... can someone tell me what this sound is???

Probably the pinion hitting the carrier caused by bad pinion bearings. Pull the cover and see if there are marks on the carrier.

Possible chipped tooth/teeth on the ring gear, or maybe a high spot on a gear tooth.

high spot on a gear tooth sounds about right. i have not opened it up yet to look at anything. i am truly ignorant about differentials...what does this mean for there to be a high spot on a gear tooth? what is the normal course of action assuming this is actually the problem?

looks like it is time for a crash course in differentials.
